How to Save Money at Mercy Pet Hospital Citrus Heights

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recently took my cat to Mercy Citrus Heights and was incredibly impressed with the care we received. The veterinarian was compassionate and took the time to explain my cat's medical situation clearly. The entire staff was kind and attentive, making a stressful visit much easier. I left feeling reassured and confident in the treatment plan. Thank you to everyone for your dedication and support! Highly recommend!

They took my cat as a new patient when he got sick when no one else would, and they got me in the next day. They helped me keep the cost reasonable as well. Now, 8 months later, I had to euthanize our kitty and they were so kind, understanding, explained the procedure very well and they were extremely patient and kind with my kids who had to come with me to do this bc I had no sitter. Highly recommend.

I’m not typically the one to take the time and write reviews, but I am truly so disappointed in the service I have received on multiple occasions. I kept coming back, giving the hospital and staff the benefit of the doubt until I simply couldn’t anymore. I have a diabetic 10 year-old dog who is on Vetsulin and has to take it twice a day everyday in order to live a comfortable life. He has gotten his ongoing care from this hospital. The Vetsulin requires a prescription. Unfortunately, on different occasions I have needed this prescription refilled urgently and my requests have been overlooked time and time again. Without this daily medication my dog experiences both short term and long term consequences. The amount of distress running out of this medication causes not only on my dog but my family, is beyond words. During those difficult times, not having the support from the hospital and staff I trusted with my pet’s health is so disappointing. Not to mention, when I would call to follow up on the status of the prescription or anything for that matter, (I always spoke to everyone calmly and respectfully), the person answering the phone at the Citrus Heights location is one of the most condescending people I have ever encountered. I am not sure why this person is the face of the hospital, please talk to her, offer her some extra customer service training or something. The staff at the Fair Oaks location do have better customer care, so I will give credit where credit is due. If you have had good experiences with this hospital, I truly am happy for you. As long as your little fur babies are being treated well, that’s all that matters. That just unfortunately was not my experience.

I called 3 days before to get my fur babies shots before our trip and they took me in even though she was a first time in. The staff is so nice and made my fur baby very comfortable. This really is a good spot to take your animals.

They are very kind and caring here. My Doberman Zeus had life threatening issues and they saved him not once but twice and got him back to normal again. So grateful for their help and saving my dog. I highly recommend them.
