How to Save Money at Chico Pet Vet
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The doctor on staff now is wonderful! She was very conscientious in caring for my cocker spaniel Charlie! I plan to go back and take my other dogs there too. I recommend this doctor!

I am applauded by your lack of commitment and compassion to a loyal customer!! You have been seeing Murphy for a year now and when I called yesterday to make an emergency drop off appointment. I was surprised that instead of saying you’d see Murphy and then running by options for care you wanted a single mom, going through a terrible divorce, on a budget to approve over $500 in medical procedures!!! What happened to good customer service and the value of loyal customers. I just cannot believe it. I know you don’t care but I am now taking my business to VCA. They will see Murphy and THEN go over any possible tests etc they might need to do to help!! You treated us so well when our dog Levi had cancer and then had to be out down but now terrible. I have no idea how that can turn away sick dog. I gave you a budget of $300 to start. Wouldn’t that being enough for you to at least look at him and tell me what might be wrong and what you might need to do further? The audacity. Anyway, I know you could care less but I definitely needed to communicate this to you all. What’s the point of having you as a primary vet if we can’t get in with you immediately?!?! Just crazy!! But I guess then again you are affiliated with the lady from wags and whiskers that is being closed down.

I’m upset that Chico Pet Vet charged me $300+ for an exam and hair test with zero follow up communication. My dog’s hair sample test was conducted at an exam on May 6 at Chico Pet Vet. After we called them multiple times since May 6, they finally emailed us the results on June 21 when we called again pushing to get the results they said would take 10-14 days. The document from 5strands shows the results are dated May 15!! My husband and I had called Chico Pet Vet office multiple times since then to inquire about the test results that I paid in advance for, again $300+. I contacted 5strands today, June 23, and they confirmed they emailed Chico Pet Vet these results on May 16, the day after the test was done!! Yet there has been no communication from Chico Pet Vet. It is unacceptable that every time we called the office within the last 6 weeks the receptionist claimed they did not have the results yet. Finally, we contacted the office again twice this week and the receptionist claimed the results “just arrived”. She put my husband on hold for 15+ minutes and then lied to us that the results had “just arrived”. Then when I called to follow up about the timeline and lack of communication and follow up, the receptionist doubled down claiming the results just came in despite the document being dated by the testing company, and she said that I was being rude and she wouldn’t lie about when the results were received. All she did was lie to us! And she acted unsure why I was upset about this situation! My dog has been dealing with an ongoing skin infection for a long time and we needed help that we paid in advance for!! They don’t seem to care about follow up. This office and the vet was supposed to follow up with me about the results when they were received, but I have yet to receive any follow up from the office, absolutely no communication has been initiated by the office or the vet. Still after I have called them and left messages and emailed, the vet has not followed up with me to go over these results! It feels like all they care about is getting our money. We have already brought in our dog twice for this skin issue she is having, and then the vet recommended an allergy test. I feel this business took my money without any intention to actually follow up with me to help me come up with a plan to resolve my pet’s skin infection. They should not be charging people in advance if they do not intend to follow through on results and care. This situation was very poorly handled by Chico Pet Vet employees all around. As of today, after all of our outreach and request to talk with a vet, there still has been no follow up or communication from this office. No apology. Nothing.

We are from out of town and had to take our dog to this facility on an emergency basis last weekend. They were able to squeeze him in even though they were extremely busy. He was seen and treated within a few hours of our initial phone call. I really liked the people in the office and thought the vet did a really good job diagnosing, explaining and treating his ailment. I also thought that the costs were reasonable, considering it was an emergency visit on a weekend. Here’s to hoping that my boy continues to improve!

They are the most compassionate and caring people when it's time to say goodbye. They truly understand they are more than pets, their family. I miss my boy, but I wouldn't have taken him anywhere else. Thank you!
