How to Save Money at Topanga Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I recently took my dog to Topanga Veterinary Clinic and the staff was incredibly welcoming and passionate about animals! They took the time to explain everything clearly and treated my dog with much love. The vet was knowledgeable and thorough, making sure all my concerns were addressed. Plus, the clinic was spotless and had a calming atmosphere. Definitely a five-star experience for both me and my dog!

For the record I did not revive any services from Topanga Vet for my dog and I am not reviewing the care or treatment. I am only reviewing the interaction with the people at the sight and the estimate. My dog got in to some food that is dangerous. I took my dog to Topanga vet for help as I was in a panic and time was of the essence. After a considerable wait I got an estimate of over $900.00 with multiple line items. I expressed my inability to pay for such a treatment. Not once was I told to call animal poison control. I did not know of animal poison control at that time. After seeing the estimate I left the facility promptly, I felt that I was being taken advantage off in a time of need and stress. I called another vet that advised me to call animal poison control and provided me with a phone number. I called animal poison control and they told me the risk is low, but for safety I should induce vomiting using simple household items. Animal poison control gave me clear instructions and provided me with all the information for a positive outcome. The fee for that was less than $100. Shame on you Topanga Vet for trying to taking advantage of a person in desperate need of help.

Edit: Minutes after I wrote this review, they texted me to black mailing me that I had 1 hour to change my review or remove it (claiming it's a fake review) or they will call animal services. I provided better services to my pet by removing the problem at the clinic myself, rather than what the vet could do for my dog. Horrible people, horrible services. They should check their cameras for what happened on the day and they would see this is exactly what happened. Talk about living in a scary world. ---- This is one of the worst vet clinics I have visited after moving to California and I will NOT be going back. The doctor there has poor communication and observation skills. The front desk lady and the vet tech were pleasant. On May 24th, I brought my 15 year old dog (a beagle) in for a ear infection, nail trim and for his paw to be examined because he kept on incessantly licking and biting it. I knew it couldn't just be allergies. He was going at it, as if he wanted to chew his paw off. It was something I never saw him do before. I brought Ziggy in with a muzzle because this is a new vet and he is not a fan of people touching his paws anyway. He is half blind and deaf and doesn't do well with people he doesn't know. When we got there, I offered to hold him the way I did at my vet in Toronto, but they said no - the vet tech will hold him. This freaked Ziggy out and he reacted more as 2 strangers approached him. I don't know why I wasn't allowed to hold my dog? The vet lightly and casually looked at his paw and said "it's nothing, it's just allergies" but I could not accept that answer. I kept on insisting there has to be somewhere there. I wish he used a magnifying glass OR SOMETHING. I couldn't accept his answer so I approached my dogs paw and dug into his space in-between each nail and paw pad (vet didn't do this). I did it 5 times to get in between all the space. And I finally found a BUR WEED! I did this without gloves because the doctor was incompetent and couldn't even properly examine the dog. I was very disappointed. I got charged for a physical examination where the doctor didn't even find the bur weed. I took it out myself. He then told me we would need to give him antibiotics and clean his paws properly, put ointment and bandage it up. It wasn't bleeding or anything, but he said we had to do all this. They also wanted to charge $70 for the nail trim because they said he wasn't cooperating and would need more staff. This is completely BS because I lived in Toronto my whole life and I would hold him down at every vet clinic while the vet cuts his nails and it has been fine. I took him to a dog grooming salon here in Canoga Park and they did it for $20, while I held him. After removing the bur weed he was fine!! No itching, no pain, completely normal. They tried to up charge me on many extra things. And now they are going to call animal services because I declined their ways of making money. How ridiculous. For the ear infection there was a cost for cleaning and ointment. I already cleaned his ears at home and I did a better job than what this vet would do (based on HOW he inspected the paw). I denied the extra ear cleaning. I have an animal rescue organization myself and I know how to clean ears. I do it all the time. If I had accepted everything it was over $1000. Just their attempt in trying to upsell everything after not even being able to find the burweed OR examine the area where the burweed came out from. I just told them all I wanted is the Osurnia gel to be put in his ears. They came and gave it to me, didn't even put it in his ears. They watched me do it. We paid for this. Honestly the worst experience ever. Do not rely on this vet for a physical examination of a pet. It also took more than 2 hours from the time I entered to the time I left. Unbelievable.

If you're going to be advised of surgery here for your family pet I STRONGLY suggest getting second opinion before going forward with anything with this business. My 2 month puppy went in for broken elbow and didnt recover. I was told she was given pain meds/anesthesia when arriving for the pain. Then they again admitted pain meds cause they needed to straighten her arm. They had said she would be prepped for surgery 6/2/24 evening and that everything will be fine we’d pick her up the upcoming Tuesday. 6/2/24 @10:20pm she was announced deceased. They stated she had congestive heart disease to which is why she died. The They found this out AFTER the procedure cause they took X-rays of the heart that indicates that. Which I don’t even know how that is even diagnosed properly. They then try to tell me they gave the same amounts of dosage to another puppy and they did fine, but ours didn’t. Cause of the disease. What precautions or screening was taken prior to surgery to make sure that my baby’s heart was strong enough for this procedure and why wasn’t a non evasive procedure/option recommended!? I had asked my mother for them to cast/splint it so we could get another opinion but they recommended this for proper healing…. The person who was doing CPR on her was also doing an Xray simultaneously. Said he was doing CPR turned around for a second and turned back around and she is gone. I’m CPR certified and I know EVERY MILI SECOND COUNTS. Why wasn’t anyone else in there to support? They even stated they gave her 2 doses of epinephrine on top of everything else We get there they said that she had passed. They turned the focus on the surgery saying the procedure was a success (like oh okay yay!). But they failed to recover her and then redirect the cause of her death do to the heart disease. I asked for records of everything, which they failed to provide at the time. After reading a lot of the other comments I see that this will be a difficult thing to get a hold of. I asked my mother to tell them to cast/splint it up so we can get a second opinion but the vet advised this recommendation over anything else. There is so much more not stated. Talking to everyone I engaged with separately. What was said happened and time frame given doesn’t add up to each others stories. My family is grieving. This was the worst place to take my loved one. I feel like we were just cashed out for a failed procedure and the attitude is “it is what it is” No actual care for my baby just an opportunity for money. RIP Kulit, you didn’t deserve this.

I was visiting the area for this past Christmas, and brought 11 year old rescue to my dog to play with my cousins two golden retrievers. They were playing in the yard and rolling around as dogs do, when my dog hurt his leg severely. We were worried that it would be difficult to get him to a vet around Christmas but thankfully they took us in. The service was amazing, everyone was friendly and surprisingly it was very affordable for the scenario. I would 10/10 recommend this clinic to anybody. You can tell that they truly care about the pets like family, and prioritize the animals well being above all else.
