How to Save Money at VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

One of the best offices I’ve been too! They got me in the same day I called for a urgent issue with my pup. Dr. Dillion was especially attentive and made sure my girl was taken care of and quickly!

Horrible Horrible Vet Office. I have been working with dog rescues for 10 years. I made an appointment for my pup who was having extreme pain. The day before my appointment my dog was mauled by another dog and passed. In the morning before I could call to reschedule I got a voicemail from CATHRINE at this office saying “You missed your appointment so we will not see your other dog next week” who was scheduled to be seen. It was the rudest voicemail I have ever gotten from a vet in the past 15 years of my life. This person shouldn’t be working with animals with such an insensitive attitude. I understand missing an appointment can be an inconvenience for you vets but we owners pay enough to have atleast some respect and concern. I will be taking my dogs elsewhere and will take this to corporate

Literally just left this place a little over an hour ago after we had to put our best bud down. The whole staff was compassionate and completely supportive and made this very difficult process as easy as possible for my wife, kids, and myself. Thank you guys for taking care of our Apollo. We miss him so much already. Pictures was when he was a healthy boy.

Helpful and caring veterinary care was extended to my two littermate Shar Peis. The vet tested my girl that was brand new here and afraid , but she was very patient and respected that we probably could do a less stressful exam by premedicating next time. Your pet receives individualized care here and to me that is very important. Thank You!

I've been taking my animals to various VCA's in the greater Sacramento area for YEARS and this is by far the best one. I had a bad experience at the last one I went to where they shamed me and made me feel stupid on multiple different occasions for health check up visits and sick visits, i.e. "How could you not notice this?". I do pride myself on being a good fur mom so being treated like I wasn't was very discouraging. I don't feel that way at all with this VCA clinic. I had a silly mistake recently where I thought my dog was sick when it turned out she was totally fine but the doctor still treated it as if there was something wrong. He also stayed longer than he probably should've to make sure all of my questions were answered which he didn't have to do. Not to even mention, it almost feels like a small community because the doctor recognized that I had just brought my two kittens in the week before and asked how they were doing. Personal touches like that are things that I really appreciate from a customer service standpoint. I don't feel like it's just an assembly line because it seems like they do try to get to know the animals that are brought in. All of the vet techs, doctors, and front desk staff I have spoken with have been very professional, kind, and you can tell that they genuinely care about you and your pets health. I have always experienced quick and efficient service with the appt time starting on time and not lasting longer than an hour. They have also been able to accommodate appointment times for when I get off of work! I definitely understand that VCA isn't the most affordable vet in the area but I've always stood by the motto that "You get what you pay for." and this VCA is worth every penny!
