How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My husband and I drove from Sacramento to this Vetco as it was the only one with availability. It was our first time at a Petco hospital. My husband and I had recently moved from Indiana to California and needed a new vet for our dog. We waited 20 minutes past our appointment time to be seen, but I understand that there may be a wait, just in when I go to the doctor. Once the doctor came in, she seemed that she did not want to come near my dog. My dog can get very nervous at the vet, but he does not bite. The vet took one look at him and asked if he needed a muzzle. I thought this was strange, as she had not even attempted to touch him yet. My husband and I assured her that he did not bite and did not need a muzzle, but she had her staff member grab one anyway. Reluctantly, we allowed her to place the muzzle and she continued on with looking him over. She tried to look in his eyes and when he moved she jumped back very quickly and scared him. Our poor dog did not seem any less anxious with the muzzle on, in fact he seemed more anxious not being able to breathe as the muzzle was very tight and ill-fitting. She told us he had allergies and was chewing his toes. This was news to me as we have never witnessed him do this. She insisted he had been chewing his toes as his paws were pink. My dog has pink skin, I never knew it could be related to allergies. She also said my dog’s ears were dirty and would require medications to treat it, and that it was most commonly an issue related to his alleged allergies. Her conversation with us was very brief before she left and sent her staff member back in with costs. As I said previously, my husband and I just moved here and our finances are somewhat tight, and we could not afford the almost $600 bill for an itch shot and ear medications, they also offered to clean his ears which was close to $90. I found the staff member to be very pushy, even after both my husband and I voiced our financial concerns. I do not know her name, but she was a younger African American girl. My husband and I wished to not spend that kind of money, and went home. To this day I have not noticed my dog chewing his toes, my husband and I even set up a puppy cam to watch him when we are not home.

First visit for our kitty was great Dr. Nguyen was so helpful. I would have given 5 stars except for I had to bring a sample back in and I came in on Saturday, I checked the open hours that were 9am-6pm I showed up at 1pm and they weren’t opened all day the Petco staff said they open on Saturdays when they feel like it. They are separate from them so they have no idea what their schedule is. It was a waste of my time and a waste of the poop sample. Besides that, thank you so much Dr. Nguyen for the calming diffuser suggestion Matcha is so calm now no more pouncing on us in the middle of the night she sleeps all night.

I started going to Vetco since 10/12/23 for our new baby puppy. Since day one staff and doctor smith was amazing. Like always with anything in life there were little hiccups, but the way tech Jessica handled one with our pups neutering was beyond expectations! Very kind and thoughtful, now we had the hardest part of a dog parent… putting our elderly chihuahua down and without hesitations Jessica offered me their services and were tremendously helpful, supportive and the love our family and nacho felt was like no other. I had no idea they offered this type of service and for a fraction of other places. This hard moment in our lives will never be forgotten and neither will the kindness give to us by doctor casuga when he passed. I wanted to share my experience because everyone is human and everyone makes and will make mistakes. But is how they try to learn from it that will keep me as client. Thank you staff!!!!!!!!!!!!
