How to Save Money at Bakersfield Pet Vet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Beware of this place and avoid if you can. The negative reviews will tell you why this place sucks. My cat had a UTI and they didn't bother taking his temperature or give medicine. They wanted $2000 to keep him for a couple of days. Glad I didn't, or else they would leave him for 2 days without care. Charged us $80 to have him looked at, so they're useless at best. Greedy and don't care about your animals.

My poor dog has been really struggling with a growth. Receptionist here said it would be okay if I dropped her off on my lunch & pick her up after work. When I arrived, they said they may not be able to see my dog due to not arriving by my ‘appointment time’ which was never provided to me beyond bringing her during my lunch from 12-1. After finally saying they would be able to see her (there was nobody else there), I received a call about 2 hours later saying 1, they had no idea at all what the issue was. & 2, on top of the exam fee for being told “we don’t know,” they also wanted to charge a hospitalization fee & provided me with a quote of $1300 for diagnostics like xray & blood panel. After asking why I was being charged a hospitalization fee if they couldn’t do anything to help my dog, they ‘waived’ it. As soon as I could, I took my dog to 4 Paws pet hospital where the vet almost instantly said she was fairly certain my poor dog has cancer (without any extra diagnostics) but stated she wanted to do X-rays & blood test to be certain & provided me with a quote for all of the same things this vet wanted to do, but 4 Paws’ quote was more than $500 less. Ultimately, I took my dog to VCA where the vet was able to confirm it is an aggressive form of cancer with zero extra diagnostics (the worst news ever but receiving an answer was better than an I don’t know). Please take your pets anywhere but Pet vet. The one star is for the kind receptionist who assisted me with scheduling asap & stayed a few minutes late for me. The rest of the staff were not kind or caring & obviously unhelpful. Their vet had no idea what was wrong with my dog, yet 2 other vets could instantly tell? Sounded like a money grab to me. I never write reviews for businesses, but this was completely not okay & I’m no longer surprised there were no other patients in the lobby. To the vet- I apologize for the negative review but I sincerely hope that no other struggling pet parent has to deal with the stress your office provided on top of the stress that an ill pet already brings. Perhaps it’s just your office staff, perhaps your whole business plan needs some revamping, but either way, something needs to be done.

I cannot recommend this vet to anyone. Took my dog in to get his testicles checked because he licked them raw. They were red and a bit swollen, but the vet claimed that there was a cut which caused all the licking. My wife and I found no cut on his testicles. He is an inside dog and our home is the safest environment he could be in. The vet said that my dog would need stitching. After looking at the breakdown of the costs, I was told I would receive a $200 discount if I neutered him, but the total cost of stitches, medicine and the neuter would be a total of $1500. I reexamined my dog’s testicles today and they are starting to scab up and heal. This vet charges a ridiculous amount and the Dr recommends unnecessary procedures. Not only that, I asked the Dr for recommendations to help my dog’s dry skin and he responded by asking me questions about his diet without any recommendations. If I were you I would stay for away from this money hungry scammer. Update to the owner’s comment: I gave my dog the antibiotics for 2 days. His testicles were already healing the following day as they began to scab. Without the antibiotics they would’ve healed perfectly fine. Don’t make it seem as if the antibiotics are the reason for the healing. As I stated before, I asked for recommendations for my dog’s dry skin and you never offered any recommendations, so asking me questions about his diet was pointless. You do not offer different treatments options that are suitable for our pets or us. You only offer treatments that are best suitable for your pockets. Offering a procedure for stitches with no open wound is insane. As I said before, you’re a damn scammer.

I took my dog on a hike. He came back and infested with ticks that same day. I bought him tick medication that same day and removed all ticks. About two months later, he started acting lethargic and had little appetite. I took him to the vet to get looked at. He recommended a lot of unnecessary services in my opinion including X-rays amounting to more than $1000. I asked for him to be tested for lymes disease which cost me about $200. My dog tested positive and I asked for antibiotic which he refused to prescribe because it was within threshold and said more tests were required. I felt like they were only interested in making money. They should have suggested to do blood and tickborne diseases test first based off the feedback provided aid. Instead, they propose to do a bunch of tests that I didn’t see necessary yet. You should propose to do test one step at a time.

I would not recommend taking your animals here unless you like being charged hundreds of dollars extra when you show up. My mom called to make an appointment for her cat to get spayed and Raven quoted her about $400. After the initial exam, the vet said they were able to spay the cat the same day and another girl came in the room to explain the cost of the procedure which turned out to actually be $1136 - over $700 more than Raven initially quoted. When my mom asked why the amount was so much more, they didn't answer her and said that's just the price. She had to ask for an itemized list and they didn't seem like they wanted to give her one. After looking at the list, it seems certain things are being charged more than once? There are two different charges for an item simply labeled "pain". She requested the spay not be done because of the dramatic price increase and they began being rude to her before she left. Charging over $700 dollars of the quoted price at the time of visit is insane and I wouldn't trust my pets with people who clearly only care about money.
