How to Save Money at El Camino Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We drove 2 hours to this vet for emergency surgery for our black lab because our local emergency vet wanted to charge 5 times the price. This place is incredible. After surgery we had a couple follow up issues, and the level of care and genuine consideration for our pup and us was truly rare to see these days. These people put your pets first, go above and beyond, even showed up on a day off for us to pick him up, and you can really tell that they care about your pet's well being above all else. This is the gold standard for what a vet should be.

Dr. Goodwein had a heck of a time figuring out why our dog was so sick, but she did some tests and got him on some meds and did figure it out and he's doing amazingly well now. She didn't suggest random expensive unnecessary tests like some vets do. She always takes plenty of time to explain things in a way I can understand and go over instructions. I've never felt like I was a burden even when I called to check in to see if the lab had results yet. The staff is always friendly and genuinely care. We love this office. It hasn't cost an arm and a leg even though we had many visits when our boy got sick. They also do cheap vaccination clinic days.

Dr. Ramos, Dr. Leton & Dr. Tarica are helping me with my sweet border collie puppy Sugar. She has a congenital heart defect from birth. All of the staff and doctors are fantastic, patient, caring, knowledgeable and the prices are very affordable. I love that they are so dedicated even during our hot and smokey summer. The best thing is they offer curbside service during these crazy Corona times. They are so warm and professional my puppy even loves coming here! Thanks a million El Camino Vet Hospital!

I have been using El Camino Veterinary since 2014. My dog, Sir William Cornelius the first, was treated for multiple issues on seperate occasions and misdiagnosed multiple times Those misdiagnosis were accompanied by astounding fees at Atascadero Pet hospital. I spoke with an excellent vet out of the area and she directed me to Dr Leton (spelling?) at el camino vet. She diagnosed Willy with Cushing’s syndrome and I can say that was 100% the accurate diagnosis. After 2 years of continued symptoms that perfectly aligned with the syndrome, he did end up needing to be put down at only 6 years old. Although it was a heartbreaking outcome, they absolutely did the best they could. We made almost weekly visits his last few months but Dr Leton, Dr Ramos, all of the vet techs and support staff were so wonderful, supportive and helpful. They loved Willy and treated him so well (even letting him stay in the vets office when he was feeling very stressed and overly expressing that stress as he often did -he was quite the vocal pitty-Rhodesian cross…. ) Cushing’s syndrome is a complex disease and and in learning and reading about it in depth, I am very confident in all the care and treatments they provided. The vets often reached out to specialists all over the country to support his care. I cannot say enough good things about El Camino Vet. A few weeks after Willy passed, another amazing dog came into my life. Unknown to me when he came home, he had valley fever. So I continued my regular visits at El Camino Vet with Lt. Leroy Conrad Drooly-face. Again, he and I were given great care through months of treatments. I love that the vets at this facility are so knowledgeable and helped educate me on my dogs diagnosis as well as provide great directions for care so that I didn’t feel helpless. The time they gave to educate was & is so appreciated. When I expressed how helpless I felt at home when I could see how bad Leroy was feeling sick, Dr Leton gave me directions on making doggy super foods at home to help Leroy feel better. Whether it helped him or not, it helped me. It was powerful advice, helping me feel like I was doing the best I could for him. I don’t think you could ask for better- a vet that provides care like this to their animal patients and owner clients. Love, love , love this team at El Camino Veterinary Hospital.

We've been going to El Camino Veterinary hospital for a long time now. I've been very happy and impressed with their care there. Recently we had to have one of our precious kitties put down due to illness causing poor quality of life and pain. When we called they got us in immediately. We were of course very sad and crying. They have a special area for this which was very comforting. I was so very impressed with their empathy and kindness in this matter. They were so kind and caring to our little kitty and to us making it so much easier to go through such a sad time. I couldn't be more thankful to have such wonderful people to care for our animals and us.
