How to Save Money at Atascadero Pet Hospital & Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They took great care of my poor dog Lucy. I am so glad that I brought her in to them! I was told by another veterinarian that she had a blockage in her stomach.. They said that they could do surgery but they would have to take her there to be cared for overnight.. I said well if that’s the case then I will take her there and see what they say. They did ultrasound on her and did not find anything wrong gave her IV fluids and waited overnight and rechecked her with ultrasound and didn’t find anything wrong.. they gave her some anti-nausea medicine and she started to eat.. they also did another XRay and ultrasound and they did not see anything in her stomach or intestines.. Dr Ofer Cherbinsky was awesome!! I definitely would take my animals back to them at Atascadero Pet Hospital! 💜

The people here really care and it shows. I’ve had the misfortune of needing to bring my kitty there twice. They performed great diagnostics, were up front about costs and risks and really helped me make the best decision for my kitty. I never want anyone to have to go to the pet ER, but if you do, this is the place. Also both times were way more affordable than I expected them to be with what was going on.

We had a wonderful experience getting our puppy neutered here. The staff was friendly and informative, and it was hundreds of dollars more affordable than our vet in SLO. Very glad I made this choice and would recommend to anyone! He was back to his normal self the next day and never bothered the stitches once. Great work is done here!!

Thank you so much for saving my dog! My 10 year old Great Dane bloated late at night in the middle of the week. You all took such good care of her and did a wonderful job with her emergency surgery. Grateful to have her with me a while longer in her Super-senior years 🤍🩶 ~ Love Christina & Storm

I am giving four stars rather than five Because of how I was treated by Roxy on the phone during an emergency. My dog Candy Has been diagnosed with IVDD. We are currently out of town and candy has suddenly lost the ability to walk normally. I called Atascadero animal hospital for advice as to what I should do to get her back home without pain so she can be seen. Roxy shared with me that I have multiple accounts with them. She was not interested whatsoever in Candy just why I have multiple accounts. I informed Roxy that me having multiple accounts is not my problem. My dog is my problem now. She hung up on me and when I called back, she said that I was yelling at her. I was not yelling at Roxy, I was trying to get her to understand that I don’t care about the multiple accounts. I care about my dog Candy and getting her home safely without pain. Roxy was completely unprofessional and uncaring about our situation. I have never had any problems with any of the staff at Atascadero Animal Hospital and have spoken highly of all the staff. It’s unfortunate that during a very trying time for me I was treated badly. I will continue to bring Candy here and hope to never have this experience again.
