How to Save Money at VCA Arroyo Grande Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I'm forever grateful for these people, as they helped me put my 21 year old companion to rest in the most empathetic and kind way, in a zen garden, with her on my lap and being held by me. That was 4 years ago, during the pandemic, when nobody else would let me into a vets office with her. They've since been good vets to my lovely 2 year old Labrahuahua. They're always very kind and gentle with her. They're on the pricy side (thus the 4 star) but worth it! Bonus, they are close enough to Grover beach to drive down the street and take the pup to the ocean or on the boardwalk after! And they have are open until 6 pm!

I wish that there was a 500 star option! Here is the deal… I have a chihuahua named Lars who is incredibly scared and skittish. He only lets me touch him. We have been putting off his shots and nail trimming because it seemed impossible and the few times we have tried with other places it failed miserably. Lars was in desperate need so we tried this place. It wasn’t pretty at first…he totally freaked when we passed him over. He peed, pooped, broke a nail off, and made some demon sounds. But Courtney and Dr. Murphy (hope I got his name right) were absolutely incredible. Their calm nature and expertise worked miracles. He didn’t make it easy, no doubt, but they all persevered. Lars is sitting here by me now with his nails trimmed and his shots. A happy boy. I’m not saying it was easy but these guys are the real deal. They made it happen and we are so grateful. No other place has given him a chance. 500 stars. I highly recommend. Good job guys, we love you!

These folks had great information and wonderful energy for our red heeler, Kip. Chelsey took the time to remove all of the stick mites from Kip’s ears. Thanks, Chelsey!!

AG Vet Hospital deserves numerous recommendations from my family, so this recommendation will come in 3 parts. We highly recommend Arroyo Grande Vet Hospital for any of your pet's needs. We can not speak highly enough of the entire staff! 1.) Our one year old puppy got into some sort of toxin. We obviously did not know that was the issue initially, and when we called about our puppy not feeling well, their response was "How soon can you be here?" The relief that is felt as a dog parent when you are able to get in that quickly is something I cannot put into words. To have the vet available when you need them is so, so important! Dr. Murphy went above and beyond, along with the vet techs, to help our Australian Shepard. The amount of phone calls Dr. Murphy had to make to keep us updated was unbelievable. But Dr. Murphy always kept us informed and updated. His dedication at trying to find the specific toxin, as well as helping our puppy was remarkable. Sadly, our sweet Australian Shepard, Nasa, did not make it. The kindness and love that was shared by the entire staff at AG Vet Hospital was extraordinary. We appreciated their support at such a difficult time. Dr. Murphy and his staff will always be remembered by our family for their above and beyond support. 2.) A year ago, our family dog was unable to walk. His hips were bad, and they finally gave out to the point we knew most likely we needed to euthanize him. It was a Sunday, and we were SO GRATEFUL that AG Vet Hospital was open. They were so kind and patient with us saying good by to our sweet boy. They helped ease the sadness of our 10 year old daughter by giving her a popcycle to give to our dog as a last treat. The kindness that the staff showed us that morning we will never forget. 3.) A couple years ago, we added 2 pet kune kune pigs to our family. We were so grateful that AG Pet Hospital was able to neuter our boys. Not many vets in the area were willing to do that. Again, there is no doubt in our family that the best vet hospital is Arroyo Grande Vet Hospital. Please know that you are so, so appreciated.
