How to Save Money at VCA South County Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had just moved to the area and got referred to this veterinary hospital by our friend for our senior dog. We absolutely love the staff and Dr. Laura Such. They all treated us so warmly and Dr. Such was so knowledgeable and compassionate with our sweet Charlie girl. We would highly recommend this office for your fur babies. They go above and beyond to make sure your fur baby is happy and healthy.

Dr. Rachel Mensing, Technician Zack, are an outstanding team who are treating my labrador at this very moment. They are generous with their time. They are concerned and tenacious and thorough, working to get to the root of the problem that my labrador is having. I could not ask for better personal care

Woke up to find our English bulldog puppy standing in a puddle of his own blood. Rushed him to his vet in Lompoc, only to be told he had a prolapsed urethra and we needed to take him 45 minutes away to the Emergency Clinic in Arroyo Grande. The Emergency Clinic gave us a price of over $5k to do the surgery and it had to be paid upfront. A very compassionate vet there stated that since they were an ER, they charged premium prices and suggested we call around to see whether another local clinic could do the job. She mentioned VCA South County Animal Hospital as a very good option. We immediately drove over there and met Dr. Reyes, who scheduled surgery for the next morning. Price was 1/5 of what we were quoted at the Emergency Clinic. Dr. Reyes was warm, kind, understanding and patient as he explained our puppy's condition and the necessary surgery. From the moment we walked in the door, we were impressed by the cleanliness, layout and atmosphere of the facility. Everyone went out of their way to treat us in a friendly and compassionate manner. We truly felt welcomed and cared about. My husband and I immediately decided to switch vets to VCA South County Animal Hospital due to the level of care we received, even though it is 45 minutes away from our home. Bolo is more than a pet - he is a family member, and we feel confident he could not receive better care anywhere else! Thank you VCA South County Animal Hospital for your commitment to providing an excellent veterinary experience for our 4-legged family members.

Don’t even want to give them a star, I just went in to get my cat his food that they prescribed him barely a year ago and he was on it for a few months then got better. I came in to get him more of the food because he started showing signs again, they refused to sell it to me and said i needed to come in for another check up. I’ve paid for about 5 “check ups” at this place. They only want me to come in for another “check up” so they can charge me again instead of caring about my cat and selling me the food they prescribed him not even a year ago. They want me to bring him in so they can charge me then tell me he needs the food I’m trying to purchase for him. I been bringing my animals here for years and got my mother to bring her cats here also, not anymore. I suggest looking for a place that actually cares about your animals more then they care about getting your money

The entire staff at VCA are professional and kind. We could tell right away how much they care for animals by how they treated our Snoopy who can be challenging to say the least! They are very thorough, informative, great at follow up and make sure you have, not just an idea of the potential cost but also an understanding. 100% recommendation and many thanks!
