How to Save Money at Ophthalmology For Animals
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been taking our dogs to this Veteranarian Opthalmology clinic for years. The original Opthalmologist has retired, but the excellent care provided by the entire team is above excellent. The Veteranarian care is thorough, thoughtful, caring and compassionate. There has never been a push to order unnecessary tests or procedures. The staff is friendly and gentle. The office is immaculate and there's adequate off street parking. I hope you never need this type of care for your pet, but if you do, I highly recommend.

I have a cat (Chewy) that gets very anxious during trips to the vet. He has had an ongoing issue with eye infections. I took him to the Opthalmology for Animals clinic and he was very upset, non-stop meowing and extremely agitated. The receptionist at the clinic sprayed a towel with feliway and placed it over his carrier and it immediately helped calm him down. Dr. Lavallée examined his eyes and performed the necessary tests to determine the cause of his infection. Angelica did an amazing job handling him during the examination - I was truly amazed that she was able to keep him compliant for the 10-15 minutes that were needed to do everything. The team at Opthalmology for Animals are truly exceptional at what they do, they are professional, kind and caring. Dr. Lavallée answered all my questions and let me know what the next steps were. It was definitely the best vet experience I have had. I didn't even know there was such a thing as an Opthalmologist for cats, but I am very glad I found them. I really feel like Chewy got the best care possible.

Hi, I’m Shannell and In January, Velvet my maltipoo dog had a sudden inflamed and bulgy eyes. I called the Opthalmology for Animals clinic, and they were able to get me in the next day. You don’t even know how this calmed me down, and knowing that they could accommodate my pet right away gave me so much relief. The staffs are all very kind and empathetic towards my pet. Starting with the beautiful and kind front desk lady, to the knowledgeable Veterinarians, and Dr. Horikawa is absolutely the best doctor. It turned out that Velvet has episcleritis and uveitis in her eyes. They were very thorough about the treatment for my pet, and all the medications were explained to me well. Dr. Horikawa and her team actually are the ones who suspected that my pet may have cancer. They went above and beyond to give my dog a physical exam and aspiration to test for cancer. They even referred me to several oncologists as it was a time sensitive matter. They literally saved my dog’s life. I thank you all so much. I am really so grateful. Every single one of you in that clinic are all heaven sent for my Velvet Cheese. I just want to say thank you to Dr. Horikawa and all the staff for your sincere care to my Velvet and for being so nice and friendly…

I took my dog Cory to Dr. Horikawa two weeks ago for an eye checkup because i saw some cloudiness in his eyes. A friend of ours recommended this place since they had a good experience. The staff members were extremely sweet and understanding even we arrived 15 minutes late. They gave Cory yummy treats and a very detailed examination. Dr. Horikawa was very patient, kind, professional and knowledgeable. Luckily no major eye issues were found in Cory’s eyes and a detailed report were given with things to look out for. The entire procedure was efficient and also fun for Cory. Thanks Dr Horikawa and staff! Bonus: the clinic is super cute with dog themed decor. And very clean.

Drs very good. Went for severe eye issue . Found out prescription was using likely cause increase issue in eye. When checking out had found out part of new treatment was using same med. The doctors Horikawa and Lavallee helped save my girl Angel's sight. Angel was getting old and her glaucoma appeared in her second eye. We never gave up on her. The Doctors both gave 110% to maintain her vision. They kept her vision until Angel passed 2 years after their initial surgery and treatment due to old age. I can't thank them and their staff enough for the attention and the care they gave us.
