How to Save Money at Del Mar Pet Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I absolutely LOVE Del Mar Pet Hospital! My dog is so excited to go every time he whines with excitement when we get down the street. My cat even falls asleep on the exam table when she's there. The staff and Drs are so friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and work with you on pricing. They are the most fair priced vet I've been to in SC county, and I've been to a lot. I'm talking $100 cheaper for a frequent shot I have to get my pup. I've been fleeced before coming here. The waiting room is inviting and clean. They even offer free teas and coffee while you wait! Ordering prescriptions is an absolute breeze and at super reasonable prices as well. I only had to wait 10 minutes for blood work to come back! I've never experienced that at a vet anywhere in this town before. You can get your results for basic panels while you're still there! They accept CARE credit and most pet insurance too. I'm very sad I only recently discovered them before I'm moving out of state. Do yourself a favor and start taking your pet to Del Mar Pet Hospital ASAP!

This veterinary practice was recently sold, and the new owners have reverted to a practice of forcing annual visits in order to receive any other services. I cannot afford the extra $79.00 on top of the flea medication and nail trims. Times two for two dogs. I adopted from the shelter and I take good care of my dogs. I miss the old veterinarian. She got it. She took care of animals where they were, and didn’t reject services to an animal because they hadn’t had an ‘annual visit’. This new place is clearly a BUSINESS.

My pup and I are new clients, having recently relocated here. Wonderful staff, friendly and fun, great care (so far just preventive), easy to get appointments. Very happy we found this little gem!

Prior to my dog surgery we didn't have a concern with this vet clinic except they will not allow you to go into the inner office with your pet during the exam. My previous vets that was allowed. My concerns started after the post op office visit. There follow up care and communication was very poor. I had to eventually take out his stitches since his first post op they thought he had an infection. Two weeks later with no followup call I was treated rudely by the office staff when they stated he had an infection and they were going to put him on antibiotics which he didn't need because the stich wound area had heald. I asked to talk to the vet and they said she could not talk to me because she was busy with other office visits. If you have a surgical patient that was noted to have a staff infection it seems to me the vet could step out for 5 mins and discuss her findings. I think its malpractice to issue antibiotics without discussing the current condition of the animal they performed surgery on. Instead, they preferred to schedule another office visit and charge me for a consultation visit which is unusual, since it should have been included in the post op office visit that I had to pay for which is typically covered by the surgery expense. ( My understanding and experience from using other vet services and my own surgery my doctor didn't charge me because they say its part of the surgical expenses). Sadly, this is my first negative post for vets services and I have had animals for 30 plus years.

The Vets and technicians at Del Mar Hospital are wonderful, unfortunately the office manager and group that recently purchased the practice have destroyed my relationship with them. I travel with my cat frequently and this requires a health pet certification. I recently went in with my cat to get a updated health certificate and they wanted to charge me 400.00. I paid 125.00 in Nov 2023 for the same certificate. When I asked about the cost increase I was told that issuing the certificate was a lot of work. I reminded them this was a recertificate and after much discussion they reduce the cost to 225.00, which is still a 80% increase for a signature on a piece of paper. I should add this is on top of the cost of the consultation. Unfortunately I have lost my trust in the entire practice. Make sure you get quotes for the services they provide before your appointment.
