How to Save Money at VCA Gateway Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Presently very dissatisfied with this office. They are withholding approval of the renewal my dogs prescription dry food pending his appointment. I was told they would approve one more bag since the appointment is set. Three fax requests from the pet store later--that they said they never received--they now verbally say they will not approve it. This particular food helps his joints and he is the one who suffers in all this.

it's a long story but Dr Sanfilippo is a careless person for over 3 months I called every other day at least, sent numerous pics and went down at least three times, begging her to get my dogger Diamond in asap and to please talk to me for 5 mins and she didn't come to the room at any time when I went down there or listen to me at all, she just told the staff to tell me no, (thank God for Rachel) Dr Sanfilippo could care less...so it was a long 3 1/2 months but diamond made it to the surgery date 😥 and was never able to walk or bark or heal because the "Dr" completely butchered her and left her sliced wide open, Diamond gave up on living 10 days post surgery, and I knew something was wrong immediately and have allways trusted the VCA staff but I stayed around just in case and I took her back in 4 or 5 days because they hurt my dogger and i knew she was dieing, so for the first time in almost 5 months Dr Sanfilippo actually comes to the room (just to see her own work, not because she cared) and after she looked at it and had a few thoughtless words I told her that's why I had begged her for three months to please help asap, then Dr Sanfilippo replied "well the cancer was so bad there's nothing we could have done anyways" but if she had even talked to me for 5 mins to discuss any of this with me instead of ignore us and leave me no other choice, then my dogger could have at least got to say her goodbyes and I'd have had another few months to spend getting ready for goodbye...the way it went I was trying so hard to help her fight to live when I should have just been holding her and telling her I love her and it's ok, because I knew they killed my dogger but I didn't wanna believe it until it happened, and now my heart is scared and ill never forgive myself for trusting Dr Sanfilippo or failing my Diamond by doing so ...R.I.P. my l💎ve... thanks again to the staff who cared and to Rachel especially, but u need to report Dr Sanfilippo, she's going to tarnish your caring reputation

I love the people here. They are the most caring and knowledgeable vet hospital I've ever been to. My dogs don't cower as they have at other places, they actually seem excited here. And the employees always seem happy to see my pets and greet them with smiles and loves. I travel the distance to continue with my pets healthcare with Gateway. It's more then worth it.
