How to Save Money at Veterinary Eye Institute Anaheim
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Last week, my cat’s third eyelid swelled up and completely covered one eye within a day. After visiting an emergency clinic, they recommended this specialty eye hospital, and it turned out to be an excellent choice! Dr. Esson was incredibly professional and experienced. It’s been just a week, my cat’s eye has already 80% back to normal. I’m so thankful for their care!

I brought my 5 year old corgi in for what was supposed to be a routine case of cataracts, the initial consultation felt very run of the mill, met with Dr Esson, did a wait and see approach, told me to come back in 6 months. I showed up at this point the cataract was completely taking up his sight. This is where things became high pressure sales, the RVT, was very intense and had a hustle like vibe to push us into doing both of his eyes. I’m glad i listened to my gut, not only did we not get a lense replacement, my dog now 4 months post surgery with a detached retina! I followed every instruction to the T, and made sure every follow up appointment was done. Only to be told, well, he came in with bad eyes, and that reattachment was not an option. But, they wanted to see us again in 4 months. You have got to be kidding me! Don’t trust your furbabies eyes with this group. My dog is now forever blind!

My husband and I adopted a blind dog and the rescue didn’t have much information about what caused his blindness. After doing some research on local veterinary ophthalmologists, we decided on VEI Anaheim to help us assess his condition. We’ve had about 3 appointments over the course of 4 months, and every time we have been so appreciative of the level of service and professionalism of the staff here. Dr. Esson and Dr. Wimms are very knowledgeable and thorough in their examinations and have helped us understand how Kona’s blindness came to be and what is considered normal for his condition. Of special note, Dana, a tech there, has been so accommodating and empathetic towards us (she has a rescued Mexican street dog too, just like Kona!). Kona is dog reactive, so we usually wait for our appointments outside to prevent him from rehearsing his reactive behaviors around the other dogs coming and going in the lobby. During a technician appointment, Dana offered to call my cell phone when it was his turn to be seen, and she even met us outside. In addition, even though technician appointments don’t normally have doctor’s notes or dictation letters, she responded to my request when I emailed the office to clarify the medical terminology she had used during the appointment. We are just so blown away by her level of care, and we are so grateful to have found VEI and its amazing staff!!

Dr Esson is an amazing gifted doctor! I'm in rescue and he has saved several kitties eyes! There was one case in particular, a pregnant mom kitty and her eye was extremely bad. Dr. Esson could do the surgery and hopefully save her eye but said her kittens might not survive. Well the surgery was a complete success, and baby kittens survived and were born healthy! I thank God for Dr. Esson and God will continue to bless him for all the wonderful work he does!

This place is all about profit. They’re closed early and on Fridays & Saturdays. I have an eye emergency for my dog, missed my appointment and could not get another appointment for a while. It has also been very difficult to find any other eye doctor that can see her right away. I didn’t how difficult this was with these type of injuries. The industry is all about profit and needs to be fixed. They make tons of money from us and probably having cocktails on Friday with our money.
