How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This Banfield is definitely my favorite vet hospital to go to.. They care about your pets like one of their own.. The OWP is amazing!!.. I’ve saved soo much money being on the plan.. I remember when my first dog passed away at the age of 6 , due to a seizure, they sent me a condolence card with all the staff signatures.. It really showed me that they cared.. Two years ago I got another dog & now she is also with this AMAZING pet hospital..

The people were nice but they seem unorganized and understaffed. Scheduling an appointment was unnecessarily difficult and they never followed up after the appointment as promised (they never contacted me about lab results). The phones are rarely answered and the inbox is full so you cannot leave a message. Currently, I cannot get ahold of them to fill a Px. My Visit) I just took my dog in for a check-up and maybe establish a Dr. since I moved to the area but they didn't ask me ANY questions about age, medical history, current medications, etc.. Before even asking about my dog's health they tried to sell me a patient plan. I should have expected this but it still sucks. My dog has a lot of health conditions a Dr. should know about and they learned about them AFTER the vet looked over my dog. So, I kind of felt like I wasted my time and the Dr.'s time. Overall I feel like they are too difficult to get ahold of for the type of care I received.

They were very accommodating to my last minute appointment. Luckily her new vet has seen my dog in the past in another Banfield location so it all worked out perfectly.

I received an automated text message this morning asking me to post a review of Banfield Pet Hospital in Albany. I would not have posted this, had I not been expressly asked to do so. According to the Banfield website and app, this branch is open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day but Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. Twice in the past month, we urgently needed to see a vet for a serious health issue. When we attempted to make an appointment on the website, the next available appointment was a month away. I called the clinic but there was no response. We loaded the cat into the car and drove to the clinic (this was at about 2 p.m.), but the clinic was locked. We could see that the lights were on and there were people inside, but they would not respond when we knocked on the window. The large sign on the door echoed the daily business hours indicated on the website. In the end, we had to drive into San Francisco to have our cat treated. Unfortunately, this was on the same day as the Juneteenth parade, and due to road closures it took us two and a half hours to get from Albany to the Banfield clinic in San Francisco, with a terrified cat howling in her carrier all the way. This experience (minus the parade) repeated itself two weeks later, when our cat developed a separate health issue and - again - the clinic was closed in the middle of the day. When I received an automated text from Banfield this morning soliciting a review, I decided instead to phone and ask for an explanation. After being kept on hold for about five minutes, a live attendant finally answered. She explained that they "do not have regular hours" and that their service hours are "pretty spotty right now" because they don't have a regular doctor on staff. She said this would continue to be the situation for the foreseeable future. When I related the details of our experience and explained how difficult this situation was for us, the attendant responded "Well, it's hard for us too" -- apparently ignoring the fact that the $1,300+ we pay Banfield annually for membership fees means that our situations are most certainly NOT equal. I asked whether at a bare minimum the clinic could change the hours posted on the website or at least place a PostIt note in the window, and she said she would "let management know." We pay Banfield $110 per month for our two cats for a comprehensive insurance plan that does not cover everything -- a total of over $1,300 per year. (Despite this exorbitant cost, we were recently still charged over $250 for one visit.) A further irony in this situation is that we used to take our pets to Albany Animal Hospital, which is ONE BLOCK AWAY FROM US on Solano Avenue. Had we not moved to Banfield (on the promise of better service and AVAILABILITY), we would have been able to receive care within a few minutes rather than driving for hours. I am extremely disappointed.

Overall experience was good. The doctors are all very nice and helpful. Sometimes the front desk at this location answer calls with the least amount of patience and respect. I waited for my cat’s lab results for almost a month which they said should be ready in 7-10 days from the day that the sample was collected. No prompt follow-ups or communication, I had to call them multiple times a week to get any updates. At the end they state the results were discarded by the lab with no reasons and explanations. I have been a customer with banfield since 2020. This was the worst experience ever with them.
