How to Save Money at PoCo West Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our kitty took a fall and was limping, but our usual vet didn’t have any openings. We called here and were told we could bring her in right away, so we did. Such a relief! We waited a bit since the vet was taking care of his appointments, but he was able to see us and take care of her which was amazing. He was friendly, great with the cat, thorough, and explained our options clearly so we felt comfortable. Price was very affordable, especially for being a last minute visit, and the receptionist/assistant(?) was very friendly and attentive as well. Very happy with our experience here. Thank you so much!!

My dog injured his front paw. My regular vet was off that day, so I took him to this clinic. Here is my experience: Vet himself is standoffish and not very friendly. Examination was conducted on a dirty floor, although a proper table was attached to a wall just 2 feet away. Visit took about 18 minutes, I paid $537.00 for – among others- $50.00 for bandage application (14 inches of bandage and less than a minute to apply it), wound cleaning and flashing (5 cc of saline water, iodine applied using a syringe so about 5 seconds) and X-rays to make sure there was no foreign objects left in the paw. 2 hours later, the dog was yelping in pain as the bandage was applied way too tight. 11 days later, after all antibiotics were completed, the paw was still infected with a lot of pus coming out. A sliver of wood was left in the paw and was causing the infection to continue. But I paid for the X-rays to make that this would not happen! I questioned the Vet about it and was told by him that he does not know how to read or interpret the X-rays and that they should have been sent out for interpretation. Excuse me? If the Vet does not know how to read the x-rays, why did I pay for $220.00 for them? Wow…. Very frustrating experience, I will not be going back.

Dr Saeid Arefi is a very good Dr. Have two dogs and been to many different vets in the tri cities. He is the best and doesn’t upsell treatment that is not required. Don’t waste your time with other vets. Highly recommended

Today I took my girl to here by the veterinarian's knowledge and professionalism. The prices were also very reasonable. However, I wasn't comfortable with the assistant's handling of my girl during the vaccine process. While their demeanor was friendly, I felt more confident holding her myself. It's important for the assistant to be confident when handling pets during procedures to ensure their comfort and safety. On the other hand, the doctor was extremely confident and handled the microchip implantation process very well when the assistant wasn't able to hold my girl as securely as needed, because she was trying to be nicer which I appreciate her behavior but it wasn’t right thing to in my opinion. Overall, I was happy with the doctor's expertise and the affordability of the services. I would recommend this clinic, but if possible, I would request a more experienced assistant for injections or give her permission the she can be aggressive while holding her.
