How to Save Money at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So here it is doctor klein saved Dewey over 5 years ago and was the best veterinarian/doctor you could ever ask for. She is the kindest person anyone could ask for when dealing with a difficult situation. Fast forward to DR. Klein retiring and they absolutely have no interest on helping anymore. I asked multiple times for my baby to get a checkup and they said her symptoms didn't sound like cancer again. MULTIPLE CALLS pleading for a checkup. They would never give me a checkup with over a year of calling and asking! Yes she passed away this morning FROM CANCER and had multiple tumors. I rushed her across town to oracle and ina ER and they we some of the nicest people over there. They told me about the tumors and that it was time. I rushed her back to SAV at 2.30 in the morning to have her go to rest in a place she is familiar with. Talk about cold hearted people that have not a care in the world for what your going through. I was absolutely disgusted with the staff and even the doctor just basically having 0 empathy for the situation. I asked a couple questions only to get a very rude response from them. I 100 percent regret bringing her to pass here and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Tammy's Ordinary Life

My servicedog, Miss Charlie Girl was sent by her primary vet. Because she was a pug, they went straight to things pugs always, for the most part have. She was 3 yrs old, and 1 of the 3 was cancer. Thankfully it was not, however Dr Meredith had not ever seen a case of Valley Fever this bad. It was in her brain. He had to remove her left eye and was so gentle with her and so kind to us. He pretty much said she'll probably have a year. I had to have her put down a year ago because the permanent Valley Fever had taken over. The bright side, she lived to 13 1/2 yrs. She was the best servicedog ever.

I work in the field. One state board away from being a CVT. When it comes to my own animals all my experience goes out the window. My dog Raina came down with a very scary set of symptoms that involved her breathing. A 1 am trip to the ER was met with a calm, supportive and competent staff that allowed me to take a breath. Rhea, Katelyn M. and Dr. Mayahi were supportive and understanding during my flustered attempts to recall all of Raina's different medications and treatments. Dr. Mayahi was so supportive and gave us great options for Raina's care. He spent extra time looking into her symptoms to create a treatment plan, all in the very early hours in the morning. I am beyond thankful to report Raina is on the way to a full recovery. My family and I cannot begin to express our gratitude for Dr. Mayahi and his team. Raina sends her love. -The Rauschen Family

I appreciate the care with which the staff treated my dog today. I was concerned he was bitten by a rattle snake. Immediately upon arrival they checked him, did a blood test, and thankfully determined this was not the issue. Dr. Fender however did determine the actual issue and the treatment. Michael was concerned and helpful when I first called, Jack checked us in quickly upon arrival, and Katie was gentle with our dog and helpful throughout. To the staff, thank you again for your care!

Just moved here and couldn’t get into 5 different vets for an urgent appointment. Walked in here and was placed in a room right away. Paid for the urgent care exam fee and my dog was examined. Our total time in office was 3 hours, but as a walk in urgent care/ER this was expected. The tech brought my pup a bowl of water and checked in with me often. The place was clean and so was the restroom! They gave me an estimate of costs and my bill at the end was well within it. If you’re worried about your pet and can’t get into your normal vet I would definitely recommend this place!!
