How to Save Money at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This morning, we rushed our fur baby of 12 years in after a sudden change in her breathing and eating patterns. Upon seeing her in the lobby, they took her right back, and the Dr immediately looked at our baby. The staff here were so kind, although there was nothing they could ultimately do for her. They waited for our kids to get there to say goodbye to her before she took her last breath. The Dr took her time answering every question and showing us the live ultrasound of the issues found in our baby. Although our hearts are broken the compassion these people showed was incredible in this difficult time.

I've taken my pets here multiple times. Most recently Dr. Boyd treated my cat. He was professional, quick and very thorough in explaining my cats diagnosis and treatment plan to me. I struggle with an anxiety disorder and the front desk and vetrinary techs were patient with me while I was in tears checking my cat in. All of Southern Arizona Specialty has impressed me. I've had two Dogs go through their Oncology as well. So thankful for their services and knowledgeable staff. Georgie is doing much better today 💗

We were rushed in from another urgent care vet up the street after being told my kitty had a urinary blockage. The staff here were QUICK, and super nice. I was obviously having a meltdown trying to prepare myself for an astronomical sized vet bill, along with the possibility of losing my cat at the same time. Turns out, my cat didn’t have a blockage after all, and the tech came out within minutes to let me know. My cat came home with me the same evening, and I must’ve called this place called a dozen times a few hours after we got home. Despite me being the most annoying person ever with my questions and concerns once we got home, they answered every single phone call, question, and the actual veterinarian called me at one point to give me advice for my cat over the phone. I will forever recommend this place. A big shout to the techs and Dr. Shannon Cochran, you’re appreciated more than you’ll ever know! These people genuinely care about you AND your pets.

We took our cat to the vet yesterday, we stated it was an emergency and they immediately took him in. We didn't get the news we had hoped for and had to make that decision to put him down due to a tumor growth on his jaw that took 3/4ths of it so he wasn't eating, drinking, and he became dehydrated and was suffering. The vet who we had was Josh Fender, he was really transparent and really helped us cope with the news. We really appreciated how appropriate he was and understanding of our situation. We also really appreciated the receptionists who were really understanding. They reassured us and told us to take as much time as we needed with our cat before we put him to sleep. We found out he was actually a boy, and was around 14 years old. To know that he is not suffering anymore is the best feeling I could ever have. Even though walking out with that empty carrier was really hard. Thank you for making this experience peaceful.

I'll start off with saying SAV responds to the 5 star reviews. So here it is doctor klein saved Dewey over 5 years ago and was the best veterinarian/doctor you could ever ask for. She is the kindest person anyone could ask for when dealing with a difficult situation. Fast forward to DR. Klein retiring and they absolutely have no interest on helping anymore. I asked multiple times for my baby to get a checkup and they said her symptoms didn't sound like cancer again. MULTIPLE CALLS pleading for a checkup. Yes she passed away this morning FROM CANCER and had multiple tumors. I rushed her across town to oracle and ina ER and they we some of the nicest people over there. They told me about the tumors and that it was time. I rushed her back to SAV at 2.30 in the morning to have her go to rest in a place she is familiar with. Talk about cold hearted people that have not a care in the world for what your going through. I was absolutely disgusted with the staff and even the doctor just basically having 0 empathy for the situation. I asked a couple questions only to get a very rude response from them. I 100 percent regret bringing her to pass here and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!
