How to Save Money at Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recently received a sick leopard gecko from a family member. She was very well taken care of at her first vet visit with Dr. Diggers. He extracted the abscesse on her left cheek and cleaned out her eye boogers and prescribed medication for the infection. My little leopard gecko is doing better now and is on the road to recovery. Thank you! 🫶 The cost was affordable and didn't break the bank. He was very knowledgeable on proper leopard gecko habitat and tank set up that would best benefit my gecko. 👍

I’ve taken 2 bearded dragons here and the assistants & doctors were all so kind. The 2nd time around I brought my male bearded dragon Gizmo who was dehydrated and had parasites. Dr. McFarland provided so much information and was so encouraging about new things to try to help my bearded dragon be himself again. Gizmo is now doing so much better and has better husbandry and lighting that is helping tremendously with his healing. Thank you all at Avian & Exotic animal clinic for helping me help my bearded dragon. Treatment prices are also at a better price point than other exotic animal vets but that’s just my opinion.

My first visit here with my bunny Bentley was great! The care was 10/10, the information provided was great and the compensation is top notch. My bunny got neutered for a GREAT price and they called me the next day to check up on him after his surgery. I NEVER had a vet call to follow up on their patient. I felt so happy to have a place that cared for my bunny so much and not just collecting the money. I would recommend this place to anyone. AND they board bunnies overnight so this is my 1 stop shop. Happy I found them!

The staff here are very friendly and communicative. We had first brought our guinea pig, Gigi, in when we had concerns about minor bleeding. They had informed us of the issue and recommended she have surgery. We didn't have the money to get it done at the time, so we kept monitoring her at home until we did. Throughout that time, the staff would periodically call to check in on how Gigi was doing, and when we needed to change the date of the surgery, they were very cooperative and understanding. My daughter had called them again when her guinea pig started bleeding heavily and they were able to get her in the same day, even without an appointment. She was able to have her surgery the next day, and we thankfully had the funds this time. During Gigi's stay after her surgery, the doctor would frequently call us to keep us updated on her condition. Our only complaint is that when my daughter requested to see her piggy after surgery, she wasn't given permission to. She had asked multiple times every day that her piggy was there, but the doctor had told us that she was still groggy from the anesthesia so it wouldn't be a good time. We have a cat that had previously gotten surgery at another clinic and we were able to see him right afterwards, so we were disappointed that it couldn't be the same case this time. Unfortunately, our girl Gigi ended up not making it, and it still bothers us that we weren't able to see her, even for a little, the days leading up to her passing. We feel it would have given us more closure. Despite that, I would recommend this clinic, as the overall experience we had here was positive. Thank you for your time and effort, Avian and Exotic.

There are not enough stars to thank Dr. Deidra Shuck-Lee, who was absolutely wonderful. My bird was attacked by my cat last night and I was in an absolute panic this morning trying to find him vet care. I must have called 5 or 6 places and none could take us. Thankfully, Kelly spoke with Dr. Lee and they were able to squeeze us in just 45 minutes later. I brought in Burt the bird and they whisked him right back taking amazing care of him! He did great and we are absolutely thrilled with the care he received from Dr. Lee. I will be forever grateful to her for saving our precious Burt!
