How to Save Money at Beardsley Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing place! I have brought my 3 Boxers here for the past 5yrs. We have had two litters of pups they have taken care of as well. My 8yr old boxer had her toe amputated due to a mass and I couldn't be happier with the end result! Awesome stitch work, it has now healed beautifully and she's back to her running playful self. Thanks Beardsley!

I would definitely recommend Beardsley Animal Hospital. When my 15 year-old Maltese Coby got suddently sick with liver failure we brought him to Beardsley. Dr. Costales and her technician Hannah were the best...so knowledgable and compassionate. We ended up having to put him down to end his suffering. A few days later we got a bouquet of flowers with a beautiful note.

Dr. Costales is amazing! She is very attentive and great with our cats. Her soft-spoken, calm demeanor has allowed us and our pets to feel comfortable during appointments. I never feel like she is trying to upsell me on anything and she truly has my animal’s best interest and health in mind. Midwestern students get a discount, and she is an alum! I highly recommend this office

Dr. Johnsen was great but the rest of my visit not so much.. I took in my kitten on a Saturday and was issued a prescription for an infection. I was told I could fill it anywhere and did not need to go anywhere special. I took the script to get filled and the pharmacist told me it was written odd and needed more info. Both the pharmacist and my wife left voicemails asking for a call back/clarification. Monday morning my wife calls for a status update and is told they have no voicemails (I am not sure if this is an IT or staff issue but leaning towards the latter) and to call the pharmacy to find out the issue. Turns out it is a script only a compound pharmacy can fill. I ask if they have any recommendations and they said they would call me back. After no calls I found my own pharmacy and still have not heard back from the vet office… I cancelled the rest of the scheduled appointments. Not getting a sense or urgency from the staff and my kitten may have FIV. The staff was super friendly which is great but if I had to pick between help for my sick kitten or friendly staff I would choose the former. Finally got the script on Tuesday three days after it was written. There are a lot of options for pet care and I recommend finding another place.

The staff was absolutely wonderful at every visit we've had so far. Every person we spoke to was so sweet to our dog. Our dog ended up having a lipoma, and the docs took care to explain thoroughly what that meant, what procedures could be done, their recommendation, and what steps were optional. They ended up needing to remove some of her teeth as well, and gave her teeth a cleaning as well. They were non judgemental, informative, and just had such positive energy with our pet. A dog can only be so comfortable at the vet, and it makes all the difference to have such welcoming doctors. Thanks so much for helping us take better care of our girl 💖
