How to Save Money at Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Most of the staff at Desert Veterinary is so amazing and caring. We unfortunately had to bring our dog in the other day with a medical emergency. They got him right in and started treating him. The front office staff was super caring and professional, and the vet made sure we knew what was going on every step of the way. Unfortunately the decision had to be made to put our beloved dog down; he just got way too sick way too fast. Even then, we were able to have time with him in their comfort room for as long as we wanted and we're able to be with him until the very end. The vet was so understanding and so caring; I will be forever grateful to her. My only issue was with the girl who does the finances, who was as cold as ice. I understand the need to be practical and that money is inevitably and unfortunately a very real part of Veterinary care, however she never showed an ounce of compassion. Overall though, they made the experience as good as it possibly could have been.

The entire team made us feel heard and made us feel like we were a priority. Toni, the nurse, took her time obtaining the history and clarified the signs/symptoms. Dr. Jacobs was very informative and empathetic with my grandmother's cat. She took the time to explain her problems, present solutions, and ultimately eased the pain she had been experiencing for quite some time. They provided exceptional care.

Dr. Reinsche is probably the most knowledgeable and kind veterinarian I’ve ever met. She always is thorough, answers all questions and my girl adores her. It’s the only time my girl actually gets excited to go to the vet. Wish all vets were like Dr. Reinsche. Best place ever!

Honestly, I have written maybe 2 reviews in my lifetime, but I wanted to take the time to write this one. Dr.Mexas has been amazing. One of my cats had some health issues for over 2 years. I went to multiple vets, paid for LOTS of expensive testing, before it was suggested to go here. She came in the room, already prepped from reading all of his past files, listened to everything I had to say intensely, then recommended a few tests and treatment plan that, within 1 or 2 visits, had my baby's symptoms under control. He has remained under control and back to his great self for about a year now. Then when my other cat immediately had health issues (which were kind of sort of diagnosed at his regular vet with routine tests), I immediately took him into her as well for treatment and diagnostics. EVERY SINGLE TIME we come, she is already caught up on their files/reviews them beforehand, LISTENS without interruption or hurrying, and suggests helpful plans of action with alternatives. I'm tearing up writing this because it is so important to have a doctor like that. As far as her office goes, it's expensive because they have the technology and plenty of workers to make it happen, but it's worth it. The workers are always friendly, and I particularly like that you can just text them what you need with a pretty fast response. There ya go. It was long, but I wanted to convey my absolute gratitude. I will continue paying the premium (vet insurance, people!), spreading the word, and bringing my boys. 🥰
