How to Save Money at South County Animal Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Sharp is the best vet around! He is caring and compassionate with pets and owners alike, very easy to talk to, and willing to take the time to explain things. Being the only vet in his very busy office, this is truly remarkable. He is also very honest. I’ve seen too many vets that will say and do things that are less than honest or ethical, perhaps because they don’t know any better or for other reasons, but Dr. Sharp will not do that. He’s a genuinely good guy who cares about the work that he does and it shows.

My dog was injured & in extreme pain. I thought it might be from his past FHO surgery elsewhere a few years prior. After X-rays I’m told they can’t see much & will have to go in & clean up the site costing thousands, but while he was in the back they cut his nails since he was so good for them. My dog in extreme pain & they cut his nails to bleeding…really! I was then referred to AR Animal Care in Russelville. They took one look at him walking in & said it’s his knee in pain, not his hip. She pushed on his hip. No pain. Pushed on his knee and wow. He injured his knee from running. Didn’t cost thousands, no need for months of rehab dealing with surgery again. Got a brace & meds for his torn ligament in his knee & recovered in a few months. This place is horrible and doesn’t know anything about the animals they should care for.

I will never be able to thank Dr. Sharp and his staff enough for taking care of my Braxton. Braxton went to jump on the couch and fell backwards damaging his disc's. He was paralyzed from the ribs down. Dr. Sharp did surgery on him, not knowing of he would ever walk again. I am happy to say that he is walking and I believe he is on his way to a full recovery. Their care and expertise that they showed went above and beyond my expectations.

Dr Sharp is a good surgeon but lacks compassion for the owners of the pet. The only time we saw him was on our first visit when we had to decide if we wanted our dog to have back surgery. When we went to pick her up to take her home the doctor didn't come in to see us and when we took her for the follow-up appt they took our dog to the back for the doctor to see her progress and the doctor never came out to speak to us to see how we were doing or ask if we had any questions. You would think after spending over $3600 he could as least come and out to speak to us. The staff for the most part was good and did all the explanation for what to do when we took her home. Wendy was like Dr Sharp. After the surgery in Fayetteville Wendy told us we could visit her the next day at the Greenwood office. I called that morning and told them it would take almost two hours to get there and the girl on the phone set a time for us to come for a visit. When we got there we found out that our dog was still in Fayetteville. The staff was very apologetic in Greenwood but when we got to Fayetteville nothing was said. We would have liked an apology by Wendy. Everyone makes mistakes and she probably got her days mixed up but acknowledging it would have been very nice for her to do since we drove two hours to see our dog to just find out she wasn't there and then drove another hour to see her. Tory was the best on the staff. She was very caring for our dog and us and had a lot of compassion. She saved this doctor from getting a 1 star for a review. Dec 6, 2022 I am pleased to report that Dr Sharp emailed us an apology and we really appreciated his effort and his apology.
