How to Save Money at Highlands Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My furbaby really liked the staff. They have very reasonable prices. Very pleasant atmosphere. My Nugget was praying that they wouldn't give him anymore shots 😅😅

Very disappointed in the reaction of the 2 people leaving as I arrived with my sick pup! I know they were closed but I just wanted them to at least watch a quick video of my baby and offer some kind of recommendation as to where I should go, is it urgent? Is he dying? ANYTHING!! Instead, I was shown a gesture of "go away", "we're closed", "don't bother me!" I was pleading and very well willing to pay ANYTHING for a moment, 1 minute, literally just a compassionate response from these so called animal lovers, assuming so since they chose the careers they did. I know I looked crazy coming in on the grass! I missed the turn from Google and thought I could just "U-turn" and enter into the parking lot. So sorry if I gave you a scare but I was frantic and desperate!! I understand you were probably only trying to be safe and such but you could have at least cracked a window and asked the situation or something! I found the gestures to be quite rude and baffling! I'm sure you saw my baby looking out from the car, he was hoping for a bit of help and/or advice, also. I surely will never attempt to seek help here, during or slightly after business hours! He's ok now, if you're curious! I'll stick to the after hours doctors for any future emergencies and continue being a loyal patron at my regular vet! So sorry to of almost inconvenienced you by asking for 1 minute of your time!

Update: Ben is now a big brother. We rescued a Toy Australian Shepherd named Dakota. They absolutely adore each other. Dakota loves Highlands Veterinary Staff. It is the best veterinary hospital I have ever taken any of my animals too. They truly care. They are reasonable in cost and very knowledgeable.

The entire staff at Highlands was absolutely wonderful. My dog would SCREAM bloody murder at his last vet when getting shots or getting his nails trimmed. They had four people trying to hold him down at one point. It scared him to go there and scared me to take him there. From the very beginning the experience was nothing but pleasant. The ladies at the front desk knew how anxious I was to have him checked out and put a note on their computer to give me a call if anyone canceled. And they did! When we got there the ladies at the front desk were super pleasant. Every one was! He had his nails trimmed and he didn’t yell, he didn’t try to run away. They took a sample of a new lump he had developed, despite Dr. Bodie believing it was a fatty tumor, to give me peace of mind. Fortunately that’s all it was. I have never seen him at ease in a new location. I have never felt so at ease in a new location. Also, they figured out that my dog was the one mentioned in another animal’s story (my boyfriend brings our kitten here) based on remembering the kitten play fighting the dog’s nub and the direction his nub wags! It made me feel good to know they were all paying attention to what they were told by owners. They had no clue prior that that was also my kitten. They just remembered the details. That tells me a lot. I would highly recommend them to everyone!!

I needed a vet to put down my very sick beloved 17 year old Siamese cat Stewie and came here from a friend's recommendation. The vet tech who assisted me was super pleasant, listened intently, showed a genuine caring heart towards us, and displayed professionalism. The vet Dr was in and out briefly for the euthanasia process but that was to be expected, and she also patted my leg gently to say It is done. I chose to cremate him and was shown the options for that in a nice way and the tech was never pushy about what I should get. Overall, even though it was a terrible time for me to say goodbye to my only child, the entire experience was definitely a positive one. Their prices were relatively comparable to other vet offices in the area and I had no complaints. Thank you for your kindness!
