How to Save Money at Huntsville Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Reasonable prices, but you will pay for it through the expense of long wait times in small hot rooms, incorrect charts, terrible office manager who will give medical advice that is incorrect and who is generally unhelpful as an employee, disorganized staff, no relief vets, no discharge instructions, and an atrocious online pharmacy. After two visits, I went elsewhere. The first visit took 3 hours even though I had an appointment. This first appointment was to meet our two dogs - no shots or tests needed. The second visit was for tests on our older dog's back legs, which required sedation, so we had to leave him for the day. The vet didn't even talk to me or give discharge instructions. When I asked questions, the only answers I received were "I don't know" since I was only able to speak with the receptionist. They are so understaffed neither the vet nor the vet tech was able to talk to me. My dog started having severe diarrhea, wouldn't eat, and wouldn't drink the next day. When I called the next day, the office manager said it was normal and to call back in a few days if it didn't get better. It got worse over the next day and when I called back during their normal hours they said the vet was not going to be in and I had to take him to the emergency vet. The emergency vet treated him for severe dehydration and nausea. He got even worse the next day, so we took him to another vet ASAP. He had pancreatitis. It was so bad the swelling was visible on a scan. Turns out this vet was giving him multiple treats which he was not used to, since he is on a prescription diet, on top of the sedation which caused his pancreas to get inflamed. This is an extremely painful condition that could have been avoided if the office manager didn't blow us off on our first call when we stated something was very wrong. I left in late February after this incident since it was not a good fit, and we found better care elsewhere. The other day (early July), I noticed a charge on my card. This vet was still pushing prescriptions related to online order authorizations even though I cancelled online reorders in March. They knew I switched vets because I had them forward my dogs' records to our new vet AND had to ask them to stop texting me reminders of upcoming shots needed. As soon as I saw the charge, I called the online pharmacy. The online pharmacy said to take it up with this vet when the order arrives since this vet is the one who pushes it through. I called this vet and they said they would have to check on the process of refunds. When they called back, they said bring the order in and I would receive a refund. I went during their set lunch hours posted on the door 12:30-1:30. That's on me for not checking before going. I went back after their lunch break around 2, but only the office manager could process the refund and she was on her lunch break even though I made sure to come after their stated lunch time. So I left for a little and came back around 3. The office manager refused to give me a refund for a still boxed and unopened order since her words "the pharmacy and us are not the same people". I told her the pharmacy told me AND their receptionist that the refund had to come from them. The office manager said because the vet wasn't going to be back until Tuesday (today is Friday during their normal operating hours on the door) that she wouldn't do anything until the vet returned. This is an online pharmacy they selected. They have signs out front and pamphlets inside to advertise using it. Their logo is on the website. It is their chosen pharmacy's policy to make returns directly to the vet. I was so frustrated not knowing how many additional trips it would take, I decided to try to donate the food rather than obtain a $135 refund. So if you're looking for a good vet, you won't find it here. I'm not saying this just because the vet seems to never be in, but because the whole operation is chaos. Pay the extra money elsewhere to save your pet's health and your sanity.

Dee Howell - Pearls of Design

As a business owner myself, I do not like to leave bad reviews. However, I also believe in honesty and I appreciate honest reviews. We have used Huntsville Animal Clinic for about 3 years now. My dog was knocking at death’s door - even after visiting the ER vet after hours. Huntsville Animal Clinic “worked me in” knowing I had an emergency - told me to be there at 10:30am but did not see me until 12:40pm. Dr Jackson identified the issue quickly - especially after the bloodwork came back. Dr Jackson went over the “total” price with me and then decided to change it, to add more stuff. I had to leave my 13 year old baby dog there with them for an IV and other treatments. When I came to pick her up at 5pm, like they told me to, my husband and I waited 45 minutes. The dr walked another patient out and spoke with the owner so, naturally, after referring to my baby as “critical” I just knew she would become out and speak to me. Jessika told me I owed another $41 (I can’t even tell you for what) on top of the $820 I paid them earlier that day. The vet tech finally walked my baby dog out, holding her little 8 pound self at waist level cradling her on her back (she hates that, like most dogs) and just flopped her into my arms. She wasn’t strong enough to even hold her head up and her poor little head just flopped onto my arm. Keep in mind, they had labeled her critical and she had been there all day. He knew her situation. Then the tech just walked off. I stood there for a moment and the vet never came out to speak to me. I took her in a few days later to have a catheter taken out of her arm. Never saw the vet. She had run out of one of her medications, so I asked Jessika if she needed more. Jessika asked if I wanted to wait to see the vet and I said yes. No one was there in the lobby, now that doesn’t mean there weren’t drop off pets in the back… After waiting for an hour I told Jessika to call me with the answer to my question. I called three times that day after I left. She didn’t have an answer and kept telling me she would call me back. At the 5pm phone call I placed, she told me she would call me back in the morning with an answer. I’m still waiting on that phone call. I have since found another vet. TLDR: HIGHLY do not recommend. Find another vet. This one seems to be all about the dollar bills.

We just adopted Betsy and she was taken here to get fixed. We have returned twice since and all 3 times the vet assistants and front desk personnel were very kind, helpful, and thorough. The veterinarian there (pardon me for not catching her name) is very friendly and genuine. You can tell she really cares for animals and their owners. We will switch our other 2 dogs and 2 cats to this vet office. Keep up the great work!
