How to Save Money at Steel City Emergency Vets
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had a wonderful experience. My poor dog couldn't pee all day, and we rushed him to the ER. They explained everything thoroughly before doing it and explained all the fees. They were able to do surgery and remove his kidney stones. Everyone was super sweet and kind from the moment we got there, to the moment we picked him up.

We took our 2 year old Aussiedoodle to this emergency vet. We explained that he had not been himself for the last two days and we knew something was not right. First negative is that we were made to sit outside due to the speculation of kennel cough, simply because it was mentioned that he had choked a few times while eating. I was able to let it slide because I understand being safe rather than sorry. We then get called into a room where the vet was surprised at our pups age, because of how lethargic he was, which was 100% NOT normal for him. We tried our best to explain that we knew something was not right and he continued on with the diagnosis of kennel cough. After $300, our pup not acting right was chalked up to a bad case of kennel cough. We were given a cough suppressant and told to monitor him for any further signs. We continued to monitor him throughout the next day but decided that we were going to follow up with our vet the next morning. We never got to follow up with our vet the next day because he ended up having a massive seizure and passing away. I hope this is the newsflash to do THOROUGH checks beyond what your initial speculation is simply to get people in and out. While I understand they are just animals, they are our family and they are loved dearly.

My cat Figaro was admitted a few days ago in the middle of the night. They quickly figured out he had a urinary blockage. They laid out all the treatment options and payment possibilities and were very patient. Unfortunately Figaro already had enough complications and needed to be euthanized. They could have made a lot more money trying to treat him and keep him alive, but the doctor was honest, clear, and kind with me. He was in a lot of pain, his vitals were not good, and it wasn't fair to him. The staff was incredibly kind and empathetic. They gave us time to say goodbye and I could feel the empathy from everyone working there. I think it says a lot about a place on how they handle bad news. I just can't say how thankful I am Figaro was in sweet hands on his last night.

We carried our boy in on 7/4/2023. They were completely packed. Almost standing room only. I talked to the lady at the front desk and explained how bad our boy was. They were so kind and generous. They got us back pretty quickly. They gave us all the time we wanted to say our goodbyes. The vet came in and was very kind. He helped our angel cross the rainbow bridge. He even told our boy that he was home at the end. They handled this very hard situation with grace and kindness. Thank you for showing Zeus such kindness

This clinic is so professional, caring and thorough. They took such good care of my older lady pup. You can tell this is not just a job for them, it is their passion. They are making a huge difference one fur baby at a time. Their pricing was reasonable for quality emergency care! Thank you for saving my baby!
