How to Save Money at Total Pet Care Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have used this vet for about 3 years now. Won't be back though. Not gonna bad mouth anyone or call names. This is just our most recent experience and you can take what you will from it. So like I've said 3 years give or take. They've always been professional and we've never second guessed anything they've said. Our mistake. Recently (per the vets own words) my dog had gotten a bladder infection due to a fatty tumor that spread. I knew and expressed that there was something more and given the age of my dog (14 years old) that I would prefer to put him down if it was a quality of life vs quantity of life situation. I was told then that it was nothing to worry about. A 2 day stay, antibiotics and non-invasive surgery and we would have a "GOOD 2 YEARS" with him before needing to revisit the subject of putting him down. Well, my husband went to pick him up and was told he was in the clear. Just needed some at home meds and a check up in 2 weeks. But that we had at least a good 3 to 6 MONTHS with him. How did you mis-speak years a day months? I digress. So we gave him his meds, as prescribed. Went back again for ANOTHER 2 week check up and was told everything was back to normal. My dog was even getting around normal again for the most part. Was a 2nd round of the same at home meds "just to be safe" but told he didn't need to come back until his 6months check up or if he started getting bad again. Mind you at the this point, we've spent almost 3k in a little less than month on getting more time that we were not only only prepared to not have in the first place, but promised double the amount of time in the initial visit, but even expressed multiple time that we preferred to go ahead and have him put down vs have him suffer. We went in on the initial visit mentally and emotionally prepare to be leaving with our baby in an ⚱️. So over the weekend he took a dramatic turn for the worst. To the point that we knew there was no coming back. Spent all weekend watching him suffer. And here's why... we were told the meds given to him were for his joint pain and an oral anti-biotic for the infection. But when the pain meds did nothing to alleviate his pain, we got curious. Googled said meds only to find that BOTH meds were nothing more than B12 vitamins. So now, instead of bring him in to have him put down, there is not only a trust issue, but the fact it now makes since that they got 3k out of us, instead of the $300 we had originally talked about when we were to put him down, knowing full well he wasn't okay and thinking they would still get not only the money they blatantly scammed us of but also the euthanasia fee very soon down the line. They did not. Luckily we have medical professionals in the family and we able to help him pass as comfortable as possible at home without being scammed by them again.

Dr. Rebecca Parker is awesome!! My puppy son, Prince sustained a pretty serious injury to his neck. This injury was so bad that his neck was wide open and you could see everything in his throat. I was worried but I could clearly see the worry and concern on Dr. Parker’s face. Prince had to have major surgery and stay a few nights in her care. The dr could clearly see my concern and she tried to reassure me even though I could see the worry on her face. I received daily calls as promised from the Dr with updates, Dea her assistant is also top notch she was so gentle and caring with Prince. But the biggest impression came from the front office staff, ( I can’t remember her name) starting with the phone call to see if they could see an emergency. The receptionist was so polite and when we arrived her compassion was helpful. After a few days I was able to bring Prince home with a drain tube, I was given very detailed instructions on how to flush the tube and how to perform his care for the next few weeks. Upon check out Selena was also very nice. This was not Prince normal veterinary practice but based on the service received his care has now been transferred to a place that genuinely seem concerned and has a love for the pets. I’m so thankful for this practice and the care and love shown to my puppy son, Master Prince.

Dr. Parker is amazing, when I say the love she has for pets is extraordinary. My grandpup was very sick, we didnt know what was wrong but she had parvo. Dr. Parker made sure to let us know Storm was in good care. The staff here is also amazing, we called daily to check on storm and they answered every question with no problem. I love this place and highly recommend

Gave this hospital only 1 star for at least the head doctor (Dr. Dawkins) of the clinic. I would give this hospital no stars if it was not for Dr. dawkins. Dr. Dawkins is a wonderful doctor that has compassion for all his clients. Dr. Parker on the other hand I had a very unprofessional experience with to say the least. I interviewed at this hospital and was introduced to a dog that was abandoned here by the name of Roxy. After meeting Roxy, my partner and I attempted to take Roxy home and adopt her. We were told that she had been living at the hospital for 8 months and that her previous owners abandoned her there. I had Roxy for 2 weeks and within those 2 weeks, Roxy managed to attack my other 3 animals. 1 dog, and 2 cats. We came to the conclusion that Roxy needed to be with a family where she is the only animal in the family. We then attempted to bring Roxy back to total pet care hospital and I was mocked and laughed at by Dr. Parker. She also denied having Roxy for that long of a time (8months) like we were told and continued to laugh at us. She then also suggested without empathy and with a smurk on her face that she would have no problem euthanizing her right then and there on the spot. We found that inhumane. When I interviewed at this hospital, I was also notified that Dr. Parker only cares about the money and not the pet. That she has almost zero compassion. This Doctor clearly sees animals lives as nothing but money in her pocket. I highly suggest going elsewhere. Doctors who lack empathy and view lives as nothing but a profit need to be brought to light. I hope this review serves all for the better judgement when looking for a doctor for their animal companion.

I came in on 10/31/2023 about my baby Sadie. Dr. Parker and her staff helped me with her transition and were very kind and empathetic to me and my kids. Dr. Parker was very compassionate and thoroughly explained Sadie's condition. They gave me time to spend my last moments with Sadie (without rushing) and ensured she was in good hands. Thank you Total Pet Care Hospital!!
