How to Save Money at Riverview Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best veterinarian clinic I have ever been to. Every person I have met has been absolutely wonderful. They truly care about your animals and develop their own relationship with them. They are gentle, understanding, extremely knowledgeable, and give fantastic advice. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!!! They truly love animals!!

The Riverview Animal Clinic provided an exceptionally compassionate and supportive experience during one of the most challenging times for our family. When it came time to say goodbye to our beloved 11-year-old pit mix, Ellie, the decision was heart-wrenching. However, the doctors at the clinic were incredibly kind and empathetic. They went above and beyond to ensure Ellie's comfort in her final moments, which brought great solace to us. Remarkably, they even offered to refund her medications, a gesture that speaks volumes about their care and understanding. This wasn't our first experience with the clinic for such a procedure, and just like the first time, the staff was incredibly caring and kind. Their actions demonstrated a profound understanding of the important role pets play in our lives. In these difficult moments, their love and compassion shone through, making the process as gentle as it could possibly be for both Ellie and our family.

We've been using them for our exotic pets for quite a while but they've raised prices so high to where we've got to just quit taking them for check ups unless there's a problem. Just took our two birds in. One for a check up and nail trimming. The other just to trim his nails. We left with a $443 invoice. We weren't there an hour. We weren't there 40 min.

I am disappointed and dissatisfied with my experience. I drove an hour+ from Tuscaloosa to get him here due to the advertisement I received from other vets who did not support avians. Firstly, I was not notified by the staff that there was a charge for overnight treatment, and I was charged $89 for that. Secondly, when Dr. Campbell called me, he said (in his exact words): “I am not sure what’s wrong with him. I will prescribe some medicine but.. well his cage seems to be really dirty….” I don’t like to be judged by the way I take care of my pets. I have 10+ years extensive experience with birds. Especially with that tone is extremely offensive. & I don’t like to have a veterinarian’s incompetence deflected onto my care. So I was charged $253 for no reason. The randomly prescribed antibiotics are not working. My parakeet is still sick after two weeks of their useless treatment. I call them and they want me to pay for another visit all over again because there first one was useless. I hate this place. It makes me sick to my stomach. Do not trust them with your exotics ever. Fin is still sick and I was gaslit and am so so sad Update Fin died today 😔💔

If I could give the staff alone a rating, it would be 5 stars. They were kind and squeezed me in on short notice, and were overall very pleasant and seemed sincere. However, my issue was with Dr.Kerlin. My pet hamster Oatmeal was sick and dying. They wouldn’t let me go back with her so I dropped her off. As soon as I get to my car, I get a call from Dr. Kerlin. I had been crying for most of the day at this point. I asked about giving Oatmeal pain medication since she was suffering. Dr. Kerlin laughed. Yes, laughed. And then said it wasn’t necessary because “not to be blunt, but she was on her way out” which is an extremely insensitive and inappropriate way to inform someone their pet is dying, even if it is just a hamster. She recommended euthanasia. I asked for her name and hung up. I paid around $140 total for this experience. Probably would not bother coming here again even though I did really like the staff.
