How to Save Money at Double Oak Mountain Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Double Oak Mountain Veterinary Clinic is amazing! Dr. Barbara Monaghan did her due diligence, unlike other vets. She actually did an ultrasound on my cat’s bladder to see where the blood was coming from because he didn’t have any crystals. It turned out he had a large mass, which was a tumor. She treated me with so much compassion and gave me a wealth of information and knowledge. She spent a lot of time explaining all the possibilities and how rare this case was. Although she’s retired now, she still works there some weeks. She’s the best vet I’ve ever met, and I’m so grateful she was there that night when my cat was blocked again from blood clots. Thank you again, Double Oak Mountain Veterinary Clinic. You all are the best!

I took my dog to their urgent care yesterday for evaluation of a minor injury (not serious enough for vet ED but needed to be seen before regular vet opened on Monday). The front desk staff were very welcoming and did an excellent job keeping me updated on expected length of wait. The care was prompt, efficient, and very reasonably priced compared to if the same issue had been addressed at one of the vet emergency rooms. The vet was efficient, kind to my pet, and did an excellent job explaining follow-up management and return precautions. I'm very grateful we have this option for afterhours/weekend issues for our pets in this area!

I went on a quest last month to find the “right” vet for my adorable 7 year old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, Abbi. It was important to me to find a vet-owned vet hospital rather than a corporate-owned one (which is getting more challenging to find!). After speaking with a few vets and office staff, I found our vet, and I am so thrilled for both me & Abbi! I dropped by Double Oak Mountain Animal Hospital about a month ago with no appointment just to see what it felt like there, meet the front office staff, perhaps get a tour. I was blown away by the warmth & professionalism of the 2 receptionists when I introduced myself. They called up the practice manager, who came out and gave me a tour of the whole facility. She was lovely, provided me with much information about the various vets there, history of the hospital, and how the clinic operated. The office was pristine…no urine smell…really clean! The surgical area was incredible, state-of-the-art, and made me feel good that if Abbi ever required surgery, she would be in a great place! Another thing I really liked was the hours…Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, Saturday, 7-Noon. But in addition to that, they have urgent care hours on Saturday & Sunday from Noon-10pm…that is amazing! That doesn’t replace the Emergency Care vets but provides a place to take your sick pet when it’s not life-threatening but they need to be seen. What an incredible service! I didn’t leave there without making an appointment for Abbi with Dr. Jason Vargas, one of the two vets who own Double Oak Mountain, now Abbi’s new vet! We got to our appointment and were taken into an exam room immediately, and Dr. Vargas’ very long-time vet tech Scott entered in less than 5 minutes. What a nice, knowledgeable kind man, and he was great with Abbi, who is less than happy to be at any vet’s office! He updated Abbi’s records, got all kinds of information about her, and in less than 10 minutes, Dr. Vargas was with us. He was terrific with both Abbi and me, and while Abbi will NEVER be happy about going to see Dr. Vargas, she and I both agree that Dr. Vargas is the “right” vet for us. Experienced, decent, has a great reputation (lots of my neighbors recommended him), and runs a quality Birmingham veterinary practice. What a fantastic first experience…I am so happy I found Dr. Vargas & Double Oak Mountain Animal Hospital!

You could not ask for a better vet. Dr Vargas has taken care of my pups for over 5 years now and is always diligent in his examinations and never sells you on something you don’t need. He is focused on providing care to your animals and takes all the time you need to understand your pets exam results. 11/10 - highly recommend!
