How to Save Money at Ballaine Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Cort really cares about animals and people. He has a heart of gold. As a rural resident, we appreciate him so much for going above and beyond the call of duty more times then I can count.

“You get what you pay for”. Their price may seem tempting but their blood tests aren’t complete and they didn’t treat my cat with antibiotics. Ordering blood tests were my idea and I wasn’t called, I had to call them twice for results. The girl at the front desk wasn’t competent in drawing blood and they kept insisting both cats needed to be sedated. My 2nd cat is 16 yrs old and compliant and they asked me to come back. My first cat might actually need to be put down because her underlying condition wasn’t diagnosed and her upper respiratory infection wasn’t even treated, which put her in bad shape. My cat might die because of their carelessness. The place isn’t sanitary so spend extra to go to a better clinic. I never had any problems with Cort, but new vet lady and front desk girl aren’t worth your hard earned money. You may end up paying for another test like we had to elsewhere. Go to Aurora Vet instead.

The clinic was great to help me get the dogs rabies shots before going to the glacier even though it was short notice.

Anyone who needs a vet, even for something minor, presumably an ear infection, should got to Cort at Ballaine Veterinary Clinic. He runs it out of his house, I think, so he prices are reasonable but he just called me back, at 10 pm, about my pup so he could send out meds for her ear infection even though his day was crazy. I will never take a dog somewhere else until he retires.

I wish I could give 0 stars but thats not an option. I had an appointment to spay my dogs here, normally I would have gone to my normal vet, but I had a free spay here from the animal shelter so I thought it might be a good option. I was hesitant because they didn’t know my dogs. Upon arrival I was already a little worried because of how run down the place was. She vet didnt ask any questions about my two dogs nor did she seem to care much about any health concerns or history they may have. Not once did she ask any questions on her own. I asked to come back with my dog because one of my dogs isnt very good with strangers. I wanted to be able to bring her back and make sure she’s comfortable. They were very hesitant about letting me come to the back. Once she realized my dog would not come on her own, she finally let me and told me to hold my dog so she can sedate her right away. She told me she would be completely sedated until I picked her up. I walk to the back and the first thing I notice is the open room filled with junk, old brooms with spiderwebs, and trash all over the place. The sink has used needles and old bottles just laying in it. Nothing had ever been cleaned. The whole room smelled like old dust and trash. The poor animals in the kennels were all knocked out and drugged up. Not one of them was awake. It seemed she didnt want to deal with any animal at all! She just wanted them to be drugged up the whole time. The table top where the surgery was to be performed was at least 50 years old and starting to rust. She then got angry once i voiced my concern. She told me im late and to hold my dog again so she can knock her out, im waisting time. Not once did she ask the dogs weight or weigh them to give them the proper dosage of anesthesia. She just had a dirty needle ready to drug my dog. To be clear, it was 9 AM and was told to drop them off by 9:30 AM. I was NOT late. I made sure im early. I then told her that im very sorry for wasting her time but I cant allow my dogs to be cut open in an unsanitary area. I took both of my dogs and walked out. I rather pay alot of money knowing my dogs will be well cared for in a safe, clean environment. Im saddened that this is even allowed.
