How to Save Money at St. Albert Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been coming to St. Albert Animal Clinic for over 9 years and have seen both Dr. Burgess and Dr. Brooks. Both doctors are kind, compassionate, caring, knowledgeable and straightforward, which we appreciated. We had been coming pretty frequently over the last year, due to our pup's declining health. When we needed to be seen more urgently, they always fit us in. We felt they truly cared about our boy and wanted what was best for him. They worked together to find solutions and treatment options for us. Unforunately, we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our boy on December 27th. Dr. Brooks and the team were amazing and made a very difficult day a little bit easier.

I have been going to this clinic for 13 years. I am surprised at all the 5 star ratings. My dog has had chronic ear issues for the past couple years. It’s been constant $300-400 vet bills every 1-2 months with no solution. When a med starts to work they provide a quarter bottle refill and charge me to go back again for another check, pluck, panel and then prescribe the same med. I was referred to an ear canal surgeon which was $8k. It’s becoming almost impossible to be a pet owner with the high vet fees and after 13 years as a loyal client I expected more understanding and care. They do not advise what you will be charged until you are at the checkout. It’s like an expectation you will pay anything for your pet. $80 shampoo as one example. I was told “I will give you a bottle of prescription shampoo” only to find it was $80 filled. I have recently changed to a vet who is recommending dietary changes, probiotics - things I never once heard about at this clinic. I am disappointed in St AB Animal Clinic and the new vet tech, Ashley, was quite rude to me and would not allow me a phone call with Dr Burgess. Dr Burgess is also difficult to get into which results in having to see different vets at her clinic throughout the years and not all have been good. I look forward to my pets final years at a clinic who cares about the cause of the allergy and infection issues rather than the steroids, shots and money.

Cannot say enough good things about Dr Burgess and the ladies at the desk at St Albert Animal Clinic! They are the most caring, kind and considerate ladies! Dr Burgess helped me and my furbaby through a very difficult and emotional week. Her caring/ love of animals and her caring professionalism with the parents of animals is outstanding. I have being going there for years and her attention to the animals and the time she takes to talk and ease our concerns is outstanding! The service there is the best!

There’s not enough words to describe how truly wonderful this clinic and their staff are. A month ago, I lost two dogs in one week, both due to cancer. As you can imagine, it was heartbreaking. But what made everything easier to deal with was the staff. Specifically Dr. Burgess and Dr. Brooks. Euthanizing a pet is never easy, but both made the process so warm and peaceful. I have such gratitude to both of them and every single vet tech and employee who works there. The staff there truly do care for your pets. I will continue to be a client there with every dog I have in my life because I know that they will receive the best care possible.

Been going to Kelly for many years, ever since I can remember. I recently went here for my big dog Bailey. She had kennel cough, Kelly took me in immediately without an appointment and was so kind. It was so reasonably priced ($260 total) for my giant Newfoundlander and got in within 15 mins of calling and explaining what was going on. I am so great full. And so is bailey
