Can French Bulldogs Eat Apples?

The old saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” But what about our canine companions? Can French Bulldogs eat apples for health benefits? And if so, how much should you give them?

Are Apples Good for French Bulldogs?

Yes! Apples can be very good for Frenchies. This crispy fruit is chock full of vitamins C and A, potassium, and potent antioxidants. They are also an excellent source of fiber, which can help your pup stay regular.

How Many Apples Can Frenchies Eat?

Most dogs love apples, most likely because of their crunchy texture and sweetness. But that doesn’t mean you should let your French Bulldog eat as much apple as she wants. Apples are high in sugar, so a little will definitely go a long way.

And because apples are high in fiber, allowing your pup to eat too much could lead to a tummy ache and diarrhea. So always serve apples to your Frenchie in moderation!

Frenchies are a small breed, so you may want to start by giving your pup two or three diced pieces. Watch them to make sure they do not have any allergic reaction or experience any GI upset. Should they tolerate apples well, you can feed a few pieces of apple a few times per week for a healthy and delcious snack.

How to Safely Prepare Apples for Frenchies

Begin by washing/scrubbing your apples to remove any harmful bacteria and pesticides, then peel them. You may wonder, why wash if I’m going to peel? It is because if you don’t wash beforehand, you will transfer whatever is on the peel into the flesh of the apple. Also, the peel has a LOT of fiber that can cause GI upset in dogs (and people!)

After you have washed and peeled, dice the apple into small pieces that will be easy for your small Frenchie to eat.

Do not let your Frenchie chew on the core of the apple dur to a potential choking hazard. The seeds can also cause your dog GI upset if eaten in large doses. If your Frenchie should get a hold of an unsupervised apple core/seeds, watch them closely and bring them into the vet at any sign of choking or digestive trouble / blockage.

Get Creative

While most Frenchies will be thrilled with a few pieces of raw apple from time to time, you can also roast some apple pieces for a more intense flavor and a bit of chew. If you have a food dehydrator, you can use that to dry out some of your diced pieces.

If you don’t have a food dehydrator, you can simply slow cook your pieces in the oven or air fryer at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours (maybe less depending on your particular over or if you are using a smaller air fryer.)

You can also do a search for healthy dog snacks using apple and follow some of the recipes you may find.

And finally, you can search your local pet store to find healthy dog treats that contain apple as one of the main ingredients.

And, as always, before giving your dog anything new, it’s always a good idea to speak with your veterinarian to get the official green light.

Can French Bulldogs Eat Apple Pie?

While apples can be a healthy treat for your pup, that does NOT mean it’s okay to given them a bite or two of your apple pie. The added sugar in apple pie and fat in the pie crust are too much for our pups.

And, since many apple pies contain nutmeg, which has a toxin called myristicin, your pup could experience major GI upset. High doses of nutmeg have been known to cause hallucinations, high blood pressure, and even seizres in dogs. If you suspect your Frenchie has eaten some apple pie, and the pie may have contained nutmeg, play it safe and call your vet (or, if after hours, your local emergency animal clinic) immeidately for gudiance on the neext steps to take.

Can Frenchies Eat Applesauce?

Unsweetened applesauce can be a refreshing treat for your dog. It’s important to avoid varieties with added sugars, as these can be unhealthy for them. To make it extra special, freeze applesauce in ice cube trays for a cool, tasty snack on hot days or after playtime.

Remember, treats should always be given in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Final Thoughts

Can French Bulldogs eat apples? Yes, in moderation. Be sure to wash and peel the apple first, then dice into tiny pieces perfect for the small Frenchie mouth. And, as always, ask your vet before giving your pup anything new.
