Bravecto Side Effects | Is it Really Safe?

As pet parents, we want to protect our fur babies from anything that can harm them. And when it comes to our sweet pups, we want to prevent an infestation of fleas and ticks. One of the most common treatments available is Bravecto. But what are Bravecto side effects and is it really safe?

Let’s explore this topic fully in today’s blog post.

Bravecto Side Effects

Back in 2018, the FDA sent out a warning about Nexgard, a popular flea and tick treatment for dogs. Nexgard and Bravecto both belong to what is called an isoxazoline class of drugs, which can come with some pretty nasty side effects, hence the warning from the FDA.

The specific warning was regarding the potential neurological side effects that come with these drugs. One of the main side effects is seizures.

What are some of the other Bravecto side effects?

When the treatment was first released into the market, there were warnings about potential common side effects such as  diarrhea, vomiting, drooling and inappetence. But “common” side effects gave way to more rare and serious side effects such as muscle tremors, wobbliness and seizures.

It should be noted that instances of these more dangerous side effects have been low, but they must be taken into consideration. This is particularly true in dogs with a history of epilepsy and seizures or those with a high risk for developing seizures.

What to Expect When Using Bravecto

Bravecto for dogs contains “Fluralaner,” which is a type of drug that kills parasites that live within or on the skin of animals with fur. Fluralaner is very effective at killing fleas and ticks, which is why it is used in so many treatments.

Fluralaner works by inhibiting the nervous system of parasites. This causes them to fall off their host and die. Of course if it can affect the nervous system of a parasite it can also affect the nervous system of the host.

This drug usually affects any fleas or ticks on your dog within 8-12 hours once the treatment has been given. And, after it’s been administered, the treatments should last between 8 to 12 weeks total. Most vets recommend their clients repeat the treatment every third month to ensure long-term protection against fleas and ticks.

Is Bravecto Safe?

So the question is, should you feel comfortable giving your dog Bravecto to treat and prevent fleas and ticks? That is really a question to ask your vet. What we can say is that while the treatment does come with some potential side effects, and some nasty ones at that, the instances of these side effects are very rare. If your pup doesn’t have a history with seizures or a higher risk of developing them, they may be a great candidate for safely taking Bravecto. Again, speak with your vet about any concerns you may have.

Are Alternative Flea and Tick Treatments Effective?

They can be, if used correctly. Natural options will require more frequent and diligent applications to come even close to the efficacy of the stronger chemical agents commonly used. And this is why so many natural alternatives “don’t work.” It’s because the pup parent is simply not following directions and being diligent enough.

If you are committed to using a greener treatment for your dog, just be prepared to be consistent, otherwise you put your dog at risk of a flea infestation or developing Lyme disease. Which is a shame because the point was to keep your dog safe and healthy.

When it comes to preventing ticks, your best natural option would be to check your dog daily using a fine-tooth flea comb and a tick removal tool.

Should you find fleas on your dog, be aware that fleas live more in an environment than on your pet, so you will have to treat your home.

The following are some common natural flea and tick prevention products you can try. Again, speak to your vet first to see what they recommend:

Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

This is a versatile option that can be used in the yard, throughout your home, and also directly on your pet. DE is a fine powder that acts as a drying agent that effectively kills fleas and their larvae. Be sure to use a quality food grade DE so you can feel safe sprinkling it on your pet’s bed, the rugs, furniture, anywhere your pet spends time. When applying it directly to your pup, be sure to avoid their eyes, nose and mouth.

Nematodes

Nematodes are commonly used by gardeners to protect plants from bugs but they can also be effectively used for flea and tick prevention. This can only be applied to the soil to kill flea and tick larvae in the ground. Never apply directly to your pup.

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV offers numerous health benefits to humans and their pets. Try mixing a 50/50 ACV to water solution and applying it to your dog (using a misting bottle) before she heads outdoors can deter fleas.

The Bottom Line

Isoxazolines have been revolutionary in our ability to prevent fleas and ticks. While treatments such as Bravecto and Nexgard do come with some side effects, the chance of developing these are very low.

Speak with your veterinarian should you still have questions about Brevecto side effects. Should you decide to employ more natural solutions, just be sure to be diligent or you risk your pup getting fleas and ticks and developing Lyme disease, which can be fatal.
