How to Save Money at Prairie Hills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would like to preface this review with we have been a faithful client of Dr. Barker’s since she was at her former practice. Her bedside manner is not like any other I have experienced. She has taken care of my rats, cats, and dogs. And every last one of them she treated like her own. She has been with our family for some very challenging and difficult decisions. She has never forced her Opinion on us, but she has made Appropriate suggestions. I have learned through the years that it is not about the price of care you pay for, it is the quality of care you pay for. My greatest wish is that people could see and understand the general cost of care. If I had any concerns it would only be the cost of medication from their pharmacy, however, they have always been amenable to sending a prescription to outside pharmacies (Northstar). Their staff have taken several calls from me when I was inconsolable and even when I was frustrated. They have listened and responded kindly. They have never treated me poorly or my animals poorly in response. Dr. Barker sat with us as our sweet Willow took her final breath. For that, I can never express enough gratitude. Yes, cremation was expensive. But in order for us to get quality care, they need to be able to hire the amazing staff they have and be able to keep the lights on. When making your fur child’s healthcare decisions keep in mind, you wouldn’t pay a school teacher to represent you in court nor would you pay a diesel mechanic to be your doctor. And recently being one of the clients that was a reason some may have had to wait to see Dr. Barker, be kind. You never know what has happened in the room next door. Prairie Hills is who I trust to care for any of my animals.

All of the staff were pleasant and attentive. I felt like my cat was in good hands at all times. Dr Barker is amazing with her knowledge and bedside manner. The facilities are brand new. I definitely recommend this vet clinic/hospital!

We live close by, were experiencing a medical emergency with our dog, and they fit us in for an emergency appointment that morning. Unfortunately, our puppy was very sick with lymphoma and we made the decision to let her pass peacefully. All of the staff were fantastic, from the techs to the doctor. Our dog was treated with so much dignity and love and they were so kind to my husband and I. We will be taking our other dogs there from now on.

We absolutely love Prairie Hills for our fur babies. Our two kitties, 14 year old senior dog and two month old puppy get such excellent care. Dr. Barker discovered things with our senior that four other vets over the years never told us or found. She can finally live out her golden years in comfort which is all we want and she deserves. Can't recommend the Prairie Hills team enough. Very professional and they do care. ❤️

If I could give this garbage facility a lower than 1 star score I would. They are NOT here to assist in your pets health or recovery. One of their "fill-in" doctors(if you can even call these people that word) ordered hundreds of dollars worth of tests for my dog when I simply asked for help with a mass growing rapidly on his leg. Then was told they cannot do anything to assist with my dog unless first paying them THOUSANDS of dollars before the operation even begins. Like you cannot even schedule the appt. so you can be in line for the surgery. The medications they prescribed to my dog were found online for 50% less than their charging, and I found a facility that understands not everyone is rich(seemingly their entire "client" list is rich people ok with being lied to and paying exorbitant costs along with it.) willing to do the same surgery for a fraction of the cost! If you truly care about your pet, take them literally anywhere else. You as a pet owner do not have to settle for garbage services provided by people who claim to care about animals...when in reality they care only about charging you as fast as possible, and as MUCH as possible. I assure you with many options for vet care here in Cheyenne, with a small amount of research and calls to them will leave you actually feeling safe and cared about. You are just dollar signs to this fraud business.
