How to Save Money at Sheboygan Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I'm so grateful for the vets and staff. Even though they are very busy, they care about every animal that comes in. I've been bringing my cat here for over a year and recently a kitten. The team is awesome! I'd recommend booking in advance because they do get quite busy.

Sheboygan Animal Hospital is the only exotic vet in the Sheboygan area. They are surprisingly affordable. I also appreciate most of their staff! They’re pretty swamped on a daily basis so there’s rarely parking space and if you call, you’ll likely be placed on hold immediately for 5-10 minutes. They also have extremely limited availability. So, unfortunately, I’ve only ever been able to have them see my pets in a timely manner twice in the 5 years I’ve known of them and intermittently used their services — once a scheduled checkup for my rats and the second time for my not-too-bright dog who ate brownies and needed to have vomiting induced. I have tried countless other times to set up a timely appointment (within 2-3 weeks) and for urgent care, and there was never availability. One time, which really rubbed me the wrong way, the lady on the phone essentially said if we weren’t existing patients, we wouldn’t be seen for an emergency. So we drove to Appleton which was the only place within two hours that could see us. Overall I feel stressed when I’m there and I can sense the animals and staff all do, too. It’s quite close quarters and noisy. I just get the sense they overbook themselves, so we drive down to Milwaukee now because I just prefer to not be here unless I have to, and the service we’ve receive at our Milwaukee has been so above and beyond: availability, quiet, brief to no hold time, consistent follow ups over the phone, sincerity and taking their time with us. Some could make the argument of understaffing, but this has been the case as long as I’ve known Sheboygan Animal Hospital. When we took our ducks there to be cremated, it was very affordable. Sadly, due to their busyness, drop off and pick up both times were a bit off putting. They felt rushed and I was standing there holding the box with my duck for quite a while before they were able to take her, and same for pickup. If it had been my dog and not just my duck, who I’m less attached to, I imagine I would’ve felt even more neglected and like I didn’t matter. Due to these consistent experiences, I don’t think I would trust them to take the time needed for my animals’ proper care, even if I did have a booking months in advance. I feel this place has so much potential. I’d love to see it reached, especially due to the convenience of their location and the fact they’re the only vet that serves exotics around! I honestly think if they exclusively served exotics they’d do just fine since they have the market there. To be clear, there’s no ill will meant by this review. Just my honest experience.

Had a wonderful experience this morning. Friendly, inviting and well educated staff. Was a new client with a very sick cat and gave me a next day appointment. Addressed all of my concerns and even found other health issues other vet offices hadn’t even looked for. Thank you for taking the extra time and care!

I always get great service there, even got in Saturday morning. I've been with this veterinarian clinic for 12yrs and have always been treated with respect, and my animals have always had great care. Very considerate of you and your feeling if it is a situation were you need to make some tough decisions. I am grateful for there service and kindness.
