How to Save Money at Badgerland Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place has gone downhill on staff and technicians. Present front staff are incompetent in relating information correctly and providing correct info. Called to make an appointment and went over the exact game plan and what my pet would be receiving as far as care and we got to the office a different game plan was presented which of course had all these other elements added on. Felt like a scam. 2 techs were rude and defensive when questioned about why the initial treatment plan changed and then tried to gaslight when I was trying to communicate what was discussed during appointment set up call. I would recommend having retraining for front staff and technicians in communication flow and giving clients correct information. I would much rather have competent people that can communicate than people that are just “nice”. Other times that I’ve had to have my pet’s information sent to an ER vet- information never came through in a timely manner, or never arrived at all. I would recommend going to a different vet.

We messaged them just to ask if they offer a k9 service and got a VERY rude reply back telling us not to abuse dogs and that his opinion is right regardless of what we say.. all because they didn’t offer the LEGAL service at their clinic…never will be taking my dog there and definitely will never recommend them to any of my dog parent friends. If they can be that rude over a question and spread false unbanked up information over email, I’d never trust them with my animals. Ive never been one to write a bad review this is actually my first negative review but this is how much of disbelief we were in to be treated such unprofessionally.

Our family dog has been going to this vet for 12 years and always been communicative in cases he needed medical attention or meds. He started to have difficulty standing and the vet was first off dismissive and took forever to get back to my mother because “it sounded like old age arthritis” and then once they finally got around to seeing him they were glad my mother persisted he be seen because he had symptoms of potential lymphoma. They did tests and instead of informing my family immediately of the results my mother had to call several times. Each time the front desk was dismissive, said she would have to wait for the doctor and even that he was out to lunch! Obviously at this point we all figured he must be ok and it’s nothing serious because what kind of heartless human do you have to be to ignore several calls and take a lunch before letting a family know their beloved pet only has 1-2 months left to live! I would expect more from a group of people who’s job it to care for animals. This isn’t a car we’re talking about it’s a living creature and they treated my family and their patient like they don’t matter. I’m so heartbroken and disappointed by the actions of everyone that was a part of these memories of the end of this chapter in a life that meant so much to so many people. You should be ashamed of yourselves and seriously evaluate your practices for delivering health critical news. It’s hard enough to find out your furry companion is passing on. How you as their health professionals treat the situation has a huge impact on helping the family or causing added stress and pain. Do better.

Dr. Penny was so good with our little Mini schnauzer who had a bad ear infection. She took her time and helped our little girl. Dr. Wickman is also great. Recommend them as vets highly wonderful care staff.
