How to Save Money at Isthmus Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat broke his leg on a Tuesday night. I took him to the emergency vet to get a diagnosis and to get pain medication for him. They recommended a surgery called FHO to address the broken leg due to the type of break. They called around to see if there were any specialists that could see him that night, and while there weren't, they provided me a quote from a specialty hospital they'd contacted, which was $3,500-4,300. Wednesday morning I called Isthmus (my usual vet), to see if they knew anyone in town or had any connections to get my cat, Walter, in sooner than the expensive specialists could (7-10 days was the window from the specialists). I was shocked when Isthmus told me not only do they have a doctor who can perform the procedure, but they had availability to do it the next day (Thursday). I was even more surprised when I received the estimate for the procedure, $1,500-2,000. Walter went in Thursday for the surgery. The total was 1600 and some change, a significant savings compared to what the specialists would've been. Dr. Gunby answered my questions, gave me reassurance that Walter would be ok, and told me he's done over 100 of these in his lifetime. Today (Friday), Walter is hopping around the house, exploring, and off doing his kitty adventures. He's still in some pain, but I'm confident he's on to a quick recovery. Businesses like Isthmus are few and far between - caring doctors, affordable pricing (they're in the business to care for pets and pay their bills, not get rich off your backs), and matched urgency. You'd be hard pressed to find a better vet clinic in town.

Isthmus Vet was highly recommended by people in the community and families I work with. Before bringing my dog in, I reached out with a variety of questions and Jen was SO kind, very helpful, and responded fairly quickly. I decided to go ahead and schedule my dog to be seen and both Jen and Tyler greeted my dog with so much kindness and care his first time there. A month later, I got my dog neutered here and Scrappy got to be under the care of such great people. Dr. Gunby performed the surgery and called me with updates throughout the day. He was so sweet, patient, and genuinely caring. I was really nervous about my dog getting neutered, but the Isthmus staff was very reassuring and made the entire process very comforting. My dog's surgery went so well, that he pretty much bounced back to his normal self by night time. They even called a few days later to check in! I'm so happy my boy was in such good hands and that he is recovering so well, so quickly.

Isthmus Veterinary Care is wonderful. We were looking for a new vet for our dog. Being new to the area, we tried a couple, and they were not right for us. We tried Isthmus, knowing my dog was in need of surgery in the near future. The first visit was great. Everyone was so kind, caring, and understanding. They did great at trying to keep our dog calm during the visit. Yesterday, she had her surgery, and it went well. From dropping her off, waiting, and picking her up, I felt cared about, and we weren’t just a number. I feel comfortable with everyone taking care of my fur baby and helping her feel as comfortable as possible. Thank you, Isthmus, for being there for us now and in the future.

I have been so impressed with Isthmus over the years. We have all of our dogs go to Isthmus for OFA's for hips and elbows. And, they even do an eye clinic twice a year. Progesterone testing with answers in an hour. The quality of care goes way beyond what we have had at other clinics. The staff is so good to get us in when we call and need an appointment I have been breeding 35 years, and yesterday I brought a litter of pups in for their health exams. Dr. Seigel was so thorough, that we have chosen to drive the distance of 1 hour 10 minutes for all of our puppies. I have been reluctant to review, as I don't want everyone to know how awesome they really are.

Generally had a good experience until today. They scheduled the wrong vaccine for my puppy, didnt confirm with me what they were giving her, then when I asked if it was the booster to what was started last time they said yes it was. Then came back 5 mins later to tell me no, it wasnt, and they started a completely new series of something else. Then they made me pay for it. So I paid $78 for a vaccine I didn't ok going to my pet and they offered no refund, nothing. After posting this review, they did agree to refund the amount to me but it took an angry call to the hospital manager to get it done. I'm leaving this review as is in hopes that Dr Siegel is informed of the malpractice, lying, and bad customer service that occurred here. Dr Siegel has truly been the best veterinarian we've had and I highly doubt he approves of what happened today.
