How to Save Money at Van Loon Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I take all my pets to Van Loon and I have for years with nothing but good service. Mark is an amazing doctor and I have had no issues with him but recently his staff has not been wonderful to me and my pets. I took my 7 week old puppies in to get their first round of shots and paid 2x how much I was quoted. When I called to get more information and ask for my money back I was told that I would be receiving no money back and the woman on the phone said “where would you like me to send your dogs medical records”. I asked to speak to Mark and she would not let me and proceeded to hang up on me not once, but twice. Like I said before I have no complaints against Mark but his staff has sadly made me take my pets elsewhere for future care.

The receptionist told me to leave a review. Impersonal but knew their stuff. I treasure my animals. And hearing about farmers needing to kill a round of cats due to an eye infection. Okay. Not my story. P.s. Never once looked me in the eyes - vet (Hein) or assistant (444). Nice work on addressing my friends issue. Poor job addressing us.

Drove early morning for appt after they assured me they could see my pet. They included me on my parents account and refused to help unless I paid their outstanding debts (which they didnt mention until I was at the clinic). I've been an independent adult for years now and I'm not sure why they couldn't have put me on a separate account. Complete waste of time due to a thoughtless policy. I'll take my service elsewhere from now on. The vet and tech aide were nice it's the management.

I wanted to write a review to balance out some of the bad reviews that made me nervous before I went here. I needed to see the vet to diagnose my beloved cat's abnormal urination. The vet tech/receptionist scheduled me for 2 days from the time I called (which is very fast for non-emergent appointments, in my experience). The vet, DVM Hein met me early in the morning. He was clearly very knowledgeable and thorough. He was gentle with my cat. Some claims that he appeared a danger to people's pets feel, now that I've met him, absolutely ridiculous. He's a bit gruff, but you can tell that's also because he's the only vet working in a busy clinic. I never felt like he wasn't telling me something. The clinic kept my cat to run tests, which he personally reviewed under a microscope to give me a thorough and clear diagnosis. He obviously cared about getting it right. My cat is diagnosed and on the road to recover. My cat is a sensitive, anxious boy and he appeared in as good a mood as I could anticipate, given the circumstances. Everyone was helpful and friendly, everyone spoke to me clearly and answered my many questions, including questions about less expensive alternatives to in clinic care and in clinic foods. No one was judgemental, annoyed, or confrontational with me. Busy? Yes. Rude? Absolutely not. I just moved to the area and I'm really glad I found a reliable and competent vet right away, as my animals are extremely important to me. Cat tax attached.
