How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had such a great experience with Dr McSky and the team! We rescued a very sick kitty and another vet recommended seeing Dr McSky. So happy that we did! Out little kitty is now thriving and on the road to recovery! The whole team was so kind and caring. They all seemed so invested in her recovery and health. Can't say enough good things! Thank you to the team at VTC for saving our girl!

I had an appointment for 7.17.23 at the Petco/Vetco location at 305 SE Chkalov Dr Ste 102. The appointment was booked previously online and on the phone. I spoke with Hayden. I asked about the new customer free exam that was advertised online on the website. I was told it was valid. I asked how much it would be for an exam if I brought in 3 kittens vs. the one. I was told $125 for the exam and shots/disposal would be extra. The week of the appointment, Hayden called me again to confirm. Again, she verbally confirmed the appointment would be $125 for the exam for the 3 cats. We are NEW customers. During the visit, I was told I would get a text message to consent to the rabies vaccination. I received a treatment plan that seemed in alignment with what was discussed on the phone and in person with the vet tech and vet. I then received 2 other text messages that are now unavailable for me to see. I figured as with most vets I would settle the bill and everything at checkout. Upon checkout, I received a bill for over $300. I told the cashier about my conversation with Hayden and she got Amanda Rose the manager. Amanda was immediately belligerent with me, would not let me talk, and said this is what it is. You signed this text. I asked for copies of records and she would not provide them to me. She would not let me explain the situation and was yelling at me and talking over me, not letting me get in one word. She treated me like absolute trash. Her communication skills were horrid. I ended up being billed for $226.02 without ANY explanation of the charges or a copy of the receipt/records. She scared my children and upset her staff. I would like my records and to be charged $125 for the exam + the cost of the one rabies shot, plus any disposal fees/taxes. I was a new customer. First time visit. Your website has false advertising and the staff did not honor the quotes I was given multiple times. Amanda Rose was just dreadful to deal with. Filing complaints with the BBB, Attorney General, Vetco/Petco Corporate, and the FTC for failing to honor the advertised and promoted rate.

Vetco is an excellent clinic. High quality staff, clean, quiet(as possible), not over crowded with a large room full of pets who could be communicable or scary to other pets made me feel safe bringing my "kids" in for treatment. .

Great clinic. Mr. Toongis was received as the lil sweetheart that he is. His very first vet visit & first car ride. The experience was awesome. They were very nice at Vetco. Doc was great & all the clinic staff. The Petco employees were very helpful as well. Thank you all.

I recently had a very negative experience with Vetco that I feel compelled to share. I brought my new cat in for a checkup, vaccination, and treatment for ear mites, but the visit turned into a nightmare. First, my cat had a severe reaction to a vaccination they administered. He stopped eating and drinking for five days, had severe diarrhea, and was vomiting. I called Vetco, and they told me to come back in. They only gave him anti-nausea medication and subcutaneous fluids, which did not help. The staff was insensitive and seemed not to care about my cat’s suffering. Moreover, they failed to provide proper education about what they were doing and why. They didn't explain the reasons for the treatments or what to expect, which left me feeling very confused and frustrated. Additionally, I scheduled a neutering for my cat, and we initially discussed one price. Later, they sent me a quote that was three times higher than the original one, with a lot of unnecessary add-ons I didn't ask for. When I questioned this, they were unhelpful and indifferent. I refused to proceed with the neutering due to these additional costs. On top of that, my cat had ear mites, and Vetco offered a flea and tick topical treatment, claiming it would help with the ear mites. It was a two-time procedure to be done once per month. Despite following their recommendation, my cat still has ear mites after two treatments and is still suffering. I now need to figure out what to do on my own and don't want to go back to them because of my previous negative experiences. Every interaction with them made it clear that their primary concern was money, not the well-being of my pet. I cannot recommend Vetco based on this.
