How to Save Money at Madison Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I think this is Veterinary clinic in Seattle and beyond! The clinic is always so clean and the staff are friendly, understanding, and are genuinely happy to see my dog, Gia!

We love Madison Street Animal Hospital. They’ve been taking care of my sweet Hera for a few years now. As she gets older they’ve been patient with our questions. Everyone is always so sweet with our pup even when she’s extra wiggly and doesn’t want to be touched 😅

My husband and I have only had wonderful experiences with Madison St Animal Hospital. They are always quick to get back to me with any concerns about my dog’s health, from the time he was a puppy through adolescence. Dr. Daiga (who we usually see) is so kind and Arlo is excited to come in every time. I also appreciate that the techs go over all treatment costs line by line and discuss all options before you agree to a treatment so there are no surprises on the vet bill.

I have a super anxious 85 lbs big boy and they always do such a good job calming him down and attending to him!

First off, the front office staff and vet techs are great, very nice and compassionate. The veterinary care… not so great, unfortunately. If you’re seeing them for something super basic, go there I guess. For anything of medium to major concern, avoid it if possible. ~My story~ My dog had a subcutaneous cyst (he’s gotten a few over the years. They usually go away on their own, but this latest one was very stubborn). Went in for a consultation, vet was open to surgically removing it, seemed very confident and made me feel like it was a typical procedure. Day of surgery: The doctor doing it was NOT the one who they said was doing it, so that was concerning to me. I personally prefer staples over stitches for large incisions, but they insisted on stitches, and that’s where it all fell apart, quite literally. Surgery (Day 1 - 10) The original stitches were not very graceful, which concerned me. Went in a couple days later because the stitches looked very very loose, so they put some glue on it. Waited On day 10 I stopped by to see if they could be removed or I had to wait a little longer, and they said it looked good and removed them. Post-Op (Day 11): The NEXT day, I wake up in the morning to my dog with 1.5-2 inch open flesh wound; the stitches were clearly not ready to come off (I follwed post-op instructions to the T). In his wound, I could see stitch threads that were still in there, which would be fine if they were dissolvable, but these were not. Red flag. I take him in and re-stitch him (which I had to pay for), so now I’m somewhere around $2,000 all-in at this point. They re-stitch, looks tighter and better. Leave them in for the full 2 weeks before getting them removed. Post 2nd Removal (~Day 35) I noticed some hard spots on my dog, just assumed it was scar tissue buildup, especially since the stitches were redone and in for a while. However, then I noticed stitch bits were still in there, was able to pull some out, but still seemed like there was one deeper in there, but I didn’t mess with it, hoping it was just tissue. Today (Day ~83) Most of the scar is fine, hair grew back, but this one hard lump still remains. It’s opened up a couple times now, with the latest one mixed with pus and blood and is a full open sore. It’s crazy that there was this much of a complication with the post-op (something I think would have not been an issue if they used staples, he’s had before and he was never in discomfort and it healed like a dream compared to this time… heck, my mom had surgery and they used staples on her and it healed great…). If the sore doesn’t heal with at-home treatment, I’m gonna go to a different vet to fix this once and for all, hopefully. Mostly because I don’t want to give this place any more of my money for what I’ve had to deal with for the past 3 months. TLDR: My dog (7yrs) had a routine cyst removal surgery (~$1,400 + tax). Should’ve been about a 4-6 week thing that has turned into a 3 month pain for me. Stitches were bad, got ‘em out, wound re-opened (super traumatic for me, and maybe him), had him re-stitched (~$400 + tax), 3 months and >$2,000 later, he’s still not fully healed and now going to a different vet to fix it. This might be a fine spot for minor check-ups, but avoid for anything that requires surgery. To end on a not so negative note: again, the front office staff and Techs were great, this review is in no-way pertaining to them. My partner and I had our other dog neutered there a month before our current incident. The neutering went pretty well (however, we did notice an issue with the stitches post-neutering, which isn’t so much of a surprise now). I’m not at all excited about having to leave this review, and I think this is my first review on Google, so that’s saying a lot.
