How to Save Money at Lake Union Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My experience at this clinic and with this vet was absolutely terrible. Communication from the vet was awful. They did examinations in a separate room and the vet refused to make time to talk to me. I was taking a cat overseas and the vet actively impeded my efforts instead of trying to help me work through the complexities. Not only was the vet wrong about whether the USDA would approve our forms (they were approved), but he made a mistake on the rabies vaccination form that was required for entry into the UK. He genuinely, single-handedly, nearly caused the entry of my pet into the UK to be denied. This vet lacks 1) the ability to effectively communicate, 2) compassion and understanding for pet owners, and 3) humility and the ability to admit when he is wrong. Furthermore, his carelessness as he rushes through things can cause major issues when things like microchip numbers are written incorrectly.

Love all the team here and I took my two pitties here for many years. One was quite nervous and reactive, they worked patiently and compassionately with me to provide good care for him here. My other dog had lifelong health issues that they provided expert advice on to manage and make our lives SO much easier and more healthy for her. 100% recommend.

We’re new to the area and picked this vet as they were nearby in SLU. They were able to book everything online and even have an app. The staff and vet were incredibly sweet with our senior cat who was a little shaken up to be there. There did some blood work and called same day to discuss the results. They were amazing and I will definitely be going back.

I’ve been bringing two of my rescue chihuahua mixes here for the last two years or so. I’m the first one to admit that my dogs are challenging patients, with a lot of behavioral and trust issues. Despite all of that, Dr. Carson and Dr. Chan have been nothing but wonderful in handling their routine care as well as few emergency visits. I trust their care and am grateful for their services.

I’ve had the worst experience at Lake Union Vetinary clinic. I was late to an appointment because a lane in the tunnel was down and because of traffic in the area and even though I had been driving for over an hour and based on the GOS should have gotten there 20 minutes early they refused to let me see the vet even though I told them that my dog had recently been hospitalized and I wanted to talk to them about it. They wanted to charge me the same amount of money to just take the dog back to get his shots without the vet actually doing any of the work. This is unacceptable and infuriating. I can’t control traffic and how can you not be a little accommodating. I’m humiliated that someone would treat me this way and not think I should be able to talk to a vet when my dog was recently hospitalized and i drove over an hour to see the vet. what a terrible experience. it would take such a small effort to help me. it was like they were going out of their way to stick to the rules and make my day miserable instead of having any empathy and compassion. People like that shouldnt be working at a vet and should find a new occupation.
