How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My first visit to VEG was a relief, compared to other veterinary emergency clinics. The pet comes first here! A professional welcoming staff. Clinic is clean, well organized. I called ahead and also had time to new client register via a link sent to my phone. Pug Smoochie was restless, shivering, looked uncomfortable and seemed painful , and left side of her cheek swelling over 5 hours. Possibly her bad tooth and will schedule a dental at her clinic. As a technician, it was great to see and work hand in hand directly with my service dog to keep her stress free. Fur babies and owners get to work together with the Veterinary staff which is great for all involved. I highly recommend them. I look forward to seeing her feel better soon.

Wow! I have been involved with dogs and training, showing, and grooming for over 40 years and have not seen anything like this place! Every person could be right by their pet almost the entire time! I was so much more at ease here than any other emergency vet clinic I have been at. They not only were kind and patient, but saw right away that I knew how to handle dogs and were comfortable with me holding him for most all procedures. Will definitely use again if I need an emergency vet!

I was referred by my pet’s veterinarian due to concerning symptoms. I had never heard of VEG and didn’t know what to expect. The setting was definitely different from other animal emergency hospitals, but in a good way. The facility was really clean and the seating was comfortable. They even had small gym mats for larger dogs to lay on instead of being on the hard floor. Coffee, water, and snacks were available while I waited. I was very anxious and concerned about my dog and being able to stay with him the entire time was helpful. Everyone treated him with such kindness (despite him being rather grumpy). I had nothing but great interactions with the ladies at the desk, the technicians/nurses, and the doctors. I was given clear discharge instructions and felt confident that my dog’s doctor thoroughly examined him. On another note, I watched the staff care for other sick and injured pets with the same compassion. An urgent triage came in — a kitten that had been badly injured and wasn’t going to recover, I watched the entire staff gather around the kitten and the lady who was visibly and understandably distraught. Tissues, water, and a chair were brought over. Eventually she went to a private room. As sad an awful as it was to witness the poor kitten and the pain the lady was experiencing, I have appreciation for everyone that surrounded her. As a mom, I am with my children throughout their routine health care appointments, urgent care visits, etc. I wouldn’t just check them in and send them back without me. VEG made me feel like I was given the same option as a pet parent as I am with my children. I think that is important and am happy to see a clinic that has transitioned to this type of setup. If any of my pets are ever in need of urgent care VEG is where I will take them and where I will recommend others take their pets as well.

I walked into VEG after quickly calling if we could be seen. They received and checked us in quickly and we were told it would be a couple hours which was not bad for an ER in my opinion. I had worked myself up to tears over the potential of having to say goodbye because I’m a worse case scenario type person but they were very kind and thorough and gentle with my old lady. I was also a bit nervous about cost bc my payday is 2 days away but they offered me lots of options. Hopefully after a few days my girl will feel better but I’m extremely happy with the care we received and the entire staff is wonderful. You can tell they all truly care about the animals

This weekend we had to take one of our pups to the emergency vet because she had consumed a container of grapes. While this was our first emergency vet experience, I have to say I was 100% impressed with the entire experience. They got her in immediately to induce vomiting and continued her care with anti-nausea, charcoal, and subcutaneous fluids. They were quick, kind, and extremely organized. The atmosphere was so calm despite the open floor plan. They let me hold my girl while they gave her syringes full of charcoal orally, and I was so happy we could stay with her the entire time. I am just so grateful to the entire staff. I hope we don’t have to be back, but it is so relieving to know we have this emergency option just down the street from us. Thank you VEG!
