How to Save Money at Ellensburg Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing people! From reception, to the techs and the vets and everyone else in the clinic! They have really come through for me many times in the last month for many different issues. Dr. Michelle Charlton was incredible, kind and gentle with my 19 year old cat a few weeks ago, and we will be seeing her again soon for some follow up care. And today Dr. Samantha Taylor really came through for a stray I have been feeding who needed to be seen same day. She was very thorough and caring about the services he needed. And explained all the work they did with him. I will be taking him back for a neuter soon. I have also taken pets Dr. Michael Fuller in the past as well, amazing person and vet. He helped my family rehab a raven years and years and years ago! I truly can not express my gratitude for everyone in this office!

I have been a client of Dr. Fullers for 9 years. I love him and his way with my little man. I used to love all of the staff. Since Covid they can’t seem to get organized. The rules are Willie Nelly constantly changing. The front desk used to have such a warm caring demeanor. Color that gone. They have a way of making you feel unappreciated as a long time client. My latest experience: Yesterday I took my dog in for a follow up to an emergency visit. It was a regularly scheduled appointment. I met with Dr Taylor who handled the emergency drop off two weeks previously of which she called me with the results. Luckily after running every test they could think of they found nothing wrong except a slightly elevated white count and she put him on an antibiotic for a week. I loved her. So yesterday I went to see her to explain what had been going on and talk about possible neurological issues. We had a good talk. She said she wanted to run some bloodwork and another urinalysis. She said I could wait in the front office. I ask her how long she thought it would be. She said 1 1/2 hours. I said I had an errand maybe I should run that and come back. She thought that was a great idea that I should come back and get him at 2:30. I got back at 2:30 and I was immediately told I couldn’t have my dog that the Dr wasn’t there and that it could be a wait and I should take a seat. I told her no that she wasn’t doing that much with my dog and look and see what I was being charged for. She told me and I said that’s right just let me pay you and if a charge was missed I would just call you and give you my credit card. I figured Dr Taylor would call me like last time. The girl said she couldn’t release my dog until the Dr came back. I asked to talk to the office manager. She said she would see if he was available. When he came I told him the Dr was gone and I just wanted to pay my bill and take my dog.I said the Dr went to pick her kids up from school and she had to have known she wouldn’t be there at 2:30.I said I could have been back by 2:00. And I should be able to get my dog. Now here is where I have to accept that I might have gotten out of line. His attitude immediately made me mad. Once again absolutely no feeling that my business was appreciated. He said obviously I wasn’t happy with their service and they would be happy to send my records elsewhere. I went and paid my bill and after spending $1250.00 in the span of a little over two weeks they had also charged me for a $25.00 emergency drop off charge. I said it wasn’t an emergency drop off and to remove the $25.00. She said she didn’t have the authority to do that. Now I am back in the managers office and things weren’t pretty. Finally I was put in a room and at 3:30 Dr Taylor finally came in. The first thing I did was apologize to her and said this has no reflection on you as a vet. I loved you when you called me a couple of weeks ago and I loved you today. I just can’t deal with the management of the clinic any longer they pushed me over the edge. She said oh no what is wrong. I said first off after spending $1250.00 they charged me $25.00 for leaving to run my errand. She said oh no I would have never charged you that. I said to her well your not the front desk are you. I also told her I had been a client for nine years and had never raised my voice before and how long does it take to be considered a good client. . I said I owned my own business for 30 years and iI I treated my loyal customers that way I don’t think I would have them long. I asked her if she practiced anywhere else because there was a Dr Taylor that practiced st Jebs. She said no that’s not me I am the owner here. I got news for the lady. She is a great vet but she obviously has too much on her plate. Trying to be a vet an owner and a mother. No one should ever leave a customer waiting for an hour so they can go pick up their kids. Sorry I was a business owner and a mother. The good side to it all they found absolutely nothing wrong with my little guy. ❤️❤️

We just moved to Ellensburg and chose Dr. Harrington as our vet and it was a great chose. Ellensburg Animal Hospital was a wonderful chose to go. The staff was extremely friendly, the lobby was clean and spacious, the bird in the lobby was beautiful. But most important to me is "my" chosen vet Dr. Harrington was very kind, warm, understanding her skill with vaccinations was great neither my senior dog or my puppy was aware they were vaccinated. It was a fabulous first visit and I would recommend Dr. Mary Sue Harrington to anyone searching for a kind gentle Veterinarian.
