How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Robertson and staff when I took my 14 year old dog, Lilly, there at 4 a.m. recently. I woke up to her shaking and panting nonstop, completely out of nowhere, and began to panic. I called the clinic and was told to bring her in. Immediately upon arriving, I felt at ease. The staff was friendly, professional, and empathetic. The entire time I spoke with Dr. Robertson, I could see the wheels spinning in his head as to what could be wrong- he was very detail-oriented, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend visiting this clinic if you are ever experiencing an emergency with your furbaby. 10/10 experience.

When my dog was having breathing difficulties I brought her here. They immediately put her on oxygen. They were very gentle with her. The staff were all very kind and professional. And the vets went over everything that was going on with her and what everything would cost very well. They made her comfortable when I couldn't and I'm so grateful

I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience at Veterinary Emergency Services. Everyone from the front desk receptionist to the vet techs were phenomenal. I knew my pet was in good, caring hands. I appreciated the follow up text to check in on my pet. Dr. Stauffer was incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Everyone explained the treatment plan thoroughly and I was kept updated on my pet’s condition. I highly recommend this office if you are ever in need!

We had to put our girl to rest this week and of course that was extremely painful for our family. They fit us in very quickly and we’re so considerate of our feelings. The assistants were very empathetic and comforting and the vet who completed the euthanasia was very kind and patient with us. Thank you for everything and I will highly recommend for anyone to use them.

Unexpectedly, our family dog had to be put down yesterday, due to severe neurological issues. We had quite the struggle getting it under control the last two days, and we had to make that difficult decision. This was the closest vet ER from our house - about a 20 minute drive. I went with my brother (primary owner) and my significant other. We explained the situation, and they told us that the vet was in the middle of surgery, but they would figure something out. Not a minute went by, and one of the ladies brought us to a room. My brother told me that he definitely felt listened to and was very well informed on the process. From here on out, they took care of us as if we were the only ones there, but, in reality, they had a million other things going on in the back. When it was time for him to go, they offered us all the time we needed to say goodbye. While my brother was next to our dog being put to sleep, I stayed in the waiting room. The receptionist was kind and reassuring while we waited. I feel like we were there a total of maybe an hour. There were a lot of things going wrong that day, and the one good thing that happened was that we had no problems with this place. If we had received bad customer service, it would’ve made letting our dog go so much harder. But, thanks to this place, they made us feel better. I hope I have no more pet problems, but if I do, I’ll be sure to take my next pet here! Thank you!
