How to Save Money at VCA Boulevard Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Service is awful. Back in 2020, I arrived with my 4 year old daughter and our cat only to be told only one of us could come in. There was no previous notification of the policy change. They offered to conduct the exam in the car which didn't seem safe or effective. Life happens, fast forward to today. I walk in with my daughter & our cat. No one greeted us. Two female employees carried on a conversation while I stood at the counter waiting. Then one walked off and the other sat down and started working on a computer. I thought she'd wrap up then help. No. A man walked in was promptly greeted & assisted with checking out by the woman on the computer. She was at the counter and again never acknowledged me. After she finished with him another couple walked in & she greeted them. At this point I asked if someone else assisted on the cat side or what? Then she asked if I had been checked in. Of course not, why would I just be standing here? It turns out I scheduled my appointment at the wrong location, I take responsibility for the error. When I showed her my email she rudely said that I was at the wrong location. No offer to reschedule. No sorry for blowing us off. I don't want to venture a guess as to why my child & I were treated so poorly but I won't return to any VCA. Also, I spoke at length with someome in the location I made the appointment at telling them we'd definitely been seen there & the website showed the info in one place but in another said new patient. It seems that the system would link records to avoid confusion.

Absolutely wonderful place to get the care your pets need. The entire staff has been wonderful to my pets and family. I've visited for everything from routine care, to injured and emergency situations

Update: Nikki called me after I wrote this review to take the time to hear from me what happened. She was very kind and honest with me about costs and what they do at this hospital. She clarified things to me that were miscommunicated during my visit which helped me view this place in a better light. She helped me cancel my care program, so I do not have to go there for a year. Based on my interactions with Nikki, I may give this place another chance after more research. Original Post: Took my dog here. Unfortunately I signed up for the care program because I was given quotes for spaying and shots that were outrageous and believed them to be honest. Online it says spaying costs anywhere from $50 to $500. I was told it would cost $800+ for my 20 lb dog. Really?!?! They wouldn't even see my dog before making me decide if I wanted to do the care program. So I was pressured to do something that locks me in for a year before even seeing if I like the vet... not cool. While some staff seemed nice, others did not. Hopefully I'll get my money's worth, but I doubt it. Unfortunately I'll be paying them about $1475 this year for care that I could have gotten for max $700.

Price can be high but they are worth it. They take very good care of my dogs and have an app that offers a chat feature for emergencies on weekends and holidays.
