How to Save Money at Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

These people are the best! You can tell they really care about your furry family member when you walk in the door. We had to have a really complicated surgery performed on our furry friend. The staff was supportive, and explained everything in detail, answering our many questions along the way! They called us numerous times throughout the day, letting us know their progress. If you have something seriously wrong with your furry family member, I whole heartily recommend this place! Dr. Raleigh and staff are fully qualified in assisting you with any oral surgery needs. They even call the morning after to check on their patients! It can be a long drive but well worth it!

We brought my one year old German Shepherd, Anna, in on a specialist referral because she was not able to open her jaw except for maybe a few centimeters. We suspected either nerve damage or possibly a dislocated bone physically preventing her mouth opening. Dr. Raleigh and the team correctly diagnosed the issue as MMM, which is an autoimmune disease. She was prescribed steroids and after a couple months of treatment is almost back to normal. With a triple M diagnosis, full use of the jaw may never return however it now appears to be 90% or better. It took nearly a day at the office with all the tests and procedures but it was time well spent. I’m beyond grateful that Dr. Raleigh and the staff was able to correctly diagnose the issue and get her back to being a playful shepherd. Every aspect of the treatment was thoroughly explained and he has called to check in on her several times and to adjust her medication despite us living well over an hour away. As she has an autoimmune disease and cannot receive vaccinations any longer, he even provided a professionally written letter explaining this to any future caretakers. Five stars does not go high enough, they did an outstanding job!

The entire team at AD&OS was phenomenal when it came to getting my boy, Thor, and I in for his appointment and procedure! Thor has been dealing with chronic dental problems since he was young and everyone that we interacted with, from the front staff, to the techs, to the doctors, were nothing but helpful and thorough when it came to addressing my concerns regarding his teeth as well as him undergoing anesthesia. I’ve been the licensed technician to assist with all of his prior procedures, so to say I was anxious would be an understatement! The team sent pictures and updates and my boy had the most uneventful anesthetic recovery thus far! We’re now three months post op and he is doing fantastic. I will plan to take all of my pets there for future dental needs.

The first red flag to anyone considering this business is that they do not give any prices at all over the phone or in any manner until you come in to see them. Second, there is a non-refundable high consultation fee that you do not even know about until they give you the estimate after waiting around for a while with a nervous dog. I’ve already taken a day off to drive an hour one way with my dog and wait nearby for when the procedure was over, and my husband took off from work to tend to our kids since I was gone; thus, I was now committed to paying the fee. I received an estimate for basic services of anesthesia, x-rays, and cleaning that were in the thousands of dollars. There were no extractions, root canals, or other treatment services. I was told this was for 3D x-rays, but the 2D x-rays would have just lessened the estimate by a couple hundred. This seemed very high, but I was already on the hook for the consult fee, so I went through with it. Afterward, feeling a sneaking suspicion that these prices seemed abnormally high, I called around to various other hospitals/clinics (at least five) that were also highly rated and found that Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery (ADOS) had quoted me double to triple the price for the same exact services (note: their low end of the price range was double/triple other providers). Two of these other providers only did 2D x-rays, and ADOS offered to do 2D x-rays instead when they saw I was shocked by their estimate. However, as mentioned above, ADOS’s estimate with 2D x-rays would only lessen the cost by an insignificant amount, and their 2D x-rays price, along with anesthesia and cleaning (no extractions, no root canal), was still triple these other places. Do your homework. Most of the people leaving reviews probably had no clue they paid immensely more than they should have, or felt the desperation I did in seeking care for my beloved pet after waiting 3 months for this appointment and the process to get him there, while not knowing about the many other hospitals/clinics that perform the same services. If this business believed in transparency and ethics, they would give quotes over the phone, which ALL the other places that I called did (one even listed prices on their website). All these other places had board-certified vets and licensed techs, too. I was debating whether to post this because I do not like writing negative reviews and never have, but after seeing that another reviewer posted today about the same issue with pricing and lack of transparency, I knew that I was not the only one. Several other negative reviews on Google and one on Yelp discuss the same concern.

I called to check the price range for dog teeth cleaning. I was told on the phone that I needed to pay $180 first for the exam and then for teeth cleaning. It's a teeth cleaning for the two-year-old dog. They did not want to share the price range or anything because obviously, it's a rip-off. I would stay away from shady clinics like this. Obviously they want you there so they can sell you on-the-spot packages and you will end up paying thousands without a reason for a simple tooth cleaning!
