How to Save Money at Gloucester Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When a veterinary organization advertises emergency services and then turns away a dying dog, they don’t deserve to have customers. Our baby was in dire distress today and after being turned away by Gloucester Veterinary Hospital, he subsequently flatlined after being resuscitated 3 times. My problem is with my baby being turned away by this unprofessional organization that espouses loving care for animals. My 12 year old Maltese didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. If you don’t take emergency cases, don’t friggin advertise you do. The Animal Clinic of Gloucester is where animal lovers should take their pets because they went way beyond the norm to attempt to save our beloved pet.

Belle had an appointment with Dr. Kathryn this morning to address an on-going grass allergy and I was very impressed with her knowledge and treatment plan for this skin condition. I have been bringing my pets to Gloucester Veterinary Hospital for over forty years and have the utmost confidence in this practice.

I am saddened to hear that my father was turned away yesterday when he got to the vets office prior to closing with his dying dog. His dog had been hit by a car and while employees stood by who could have helped...no one did. The employees of this office said they could not help because they were closing and told my father to go to other clinics. The dog passed away on the transport to another veterinarian clinic. While the dog may not have been able to be saved that poor animal was left to suffer another 45 minutes because employees did not have it in their hearts to stay late a few minutes. Our dogs are more than just pets, they are family members and this lack of remorse or care for a dying animal is appalling. My father was also left to watch his dog suffer because this animal clinic failed to offer any empathy.

A few months ago we brought the Licorice in for tumor on her side. We couldn’t of asked for better care for her and her aging days and understanding of the circumstances. To give her comfort in removing the tumor that existed. A couple weeks ago we brought her back with her tumor returning in multiple places. With her age of +20 Fred and I couldn’t Bear to see her in pain that she has been so brave to Indore. We could not have ask for better care for our sweet licorice the day we all agreed to end her pain and suffering. To watch you in action as your staff took her in to the clinic in your gentle arms to the clinic, then to be returned to us in a few moments later in a comfortable blanket made of love from someone we don’t know. Who understands The feeling that we would be having In seeing the care you did with her for she, as she spent her last moments with people that care as much for her as we do. She was a big part of our lives. She was here through our kids is growing up and their children coming into the world growing up. Licorice was as gentle with the babies as well as she was the children. Fred and I just want to thank you for the love and care not to mention the professionalism that you provided to us in our pets for every visit, every phone call , every emergency that we experienced With them in your care. Thank you again and God bless. Sheila & Fred Butler Cici & Franks
