How to Save Money at Well Whiskers: Veterinary Holistic Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 2 dogs and I were in my car when I pulled into Green springs park in Fairfax, VA. My windows were down and as soon as I parked a man walked up to the side of my car, shoved his hands into my open window, placed his hands around my neck and started to choke me. Then he beat my head and face until I was bleeding from my nose, my mouth, and my head. I kept my hand on my horn as long as I could so anybody in the park might notice and help me. I think I was screaming very loudly but it all happened so fast that I can't say how long I was screaming or honking my horn. One of my teeth was broken and as he smashed my face my tooth popped. People (amazing people) heard my horn and as they called the police I could hear their voices say that help was on the way. The attacker must have heard these good people The attacker stopped punching me and I'm guessing he walked away or rode a bicycle away. My little dogs saw this attack and both never were the same. I'm not the same either. I had been going to that park for decades. One of my little dogs won't even get into my car with out shaking so badly, so I only put her in the car for vet appointments. The other dog lost some of her sweetness as well as her friendliness and then as time went on she became physically ill. She was vomiting and her blood test showed her liver ALT at 781. I began to search for a holistic vet practice to visit for any type of support or treatment that would also help her, along with her regular vet. As my little dog begins to feel better and more calm I will bring my other dog in as well. I just need to start with one dog. I really liked how my dog was cared for, assessed, and treated today. I will continue to bring her in and I believe she will continue to get better as she receives her individualized treatment and visits. She seemed happier today after her afternoon nap. She wanted to play with her toys, run up and down my hallway, & her appetite was very good! I look forward to more visits and have already made my second appointment for her She trusted Dr. Yokota to hold her and treat her. I liked and trusted Dr. Yokota too. I had so many questions. She was very patient and knowledgeable with all of my notes and questions. Thank you for caring so much and for offering this type of care for my pet.

Lucy Had her second acupuncture appointment in as many weeks- she’s 14 and is taking up space in the house again. Yes, her normal bed is in a corner next to the couch- but now she’s also spending time in the middle of the floor, or rolling In the hall, or yelling at the other dogs in the house. She’s more engaged, more aware, and more social. She’s also more mobile. I’m thrilled with the care and detailed approach Dr. Yokota offers. I’m also happy that my girl is back to pushing the boys out of the way when she wants attention.

Dr. Yokota is just amazing with our opinionated cat-dog (aka Pekingese). She meets him where he is in terms of his comfort level. I never thought that our dog would agree to acupuncture for his kidney issues, but Dr. Yokota has made it happen. We have been with her since January 2023 and recommend her without any hesitation to anyone looking for a holistic vet.

Dr Yokota has been wonderful. My 13 year old lab has some back and hip issues. He’s doing great with Dr Yokota’s treatment. Plus, she’s given me great advice for taking care of an older dog - calming my nerves and has been a great source of knowledge. I highly recommend her to anyone with an older or injured pet.
