How to Save Money at Chesapeake Humane Society Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Bernadette, if that’s the front desk lady real name. She made me feel very invaluable as a customer. She was extremely rude not very helpful at all her tone was full of venomous attitude. I kept telling her I was a regular customer and do not know how to request the online appointment and that the previous lady at front desk tried to make my appointment while I was there but I told her that I would have to look at work schedule and that she told me just to call and pay my $30 appointment fee like I usually do. She wanted me to name drop instead of being sympathetic of my situation. She even hung up the phone on me and when I called back she had a chuckle in her voice and would not let me speak with a manager. She kept going back and forth with me that she had to know what it was about first. I know that the humane society is a blessing to us that are low income needy families as much as I am grateful to have you all service. I feel like it should be reciprocated in the way we are spoken to at the counter and over the phone. Not making us feel less then. A as bd not being heard and sympathized with.

I recently had a fantastic experience with the Chesapeake Humane Society when I took my dog Apollo to be neutered. The whole process was very smooth, and I was extremely impressed with the level of care and attention that he received. The staff at the Chesapeake Humane Society were very friendly and welcoming. They provided me with all the necessary information about the procedure and what to expect, which put my mind at ease. They were also very thorough in their examination of my dog, ensuring that he was healthy and ready for the surgery. The cost of the procedure was very reasonable, and I was impressed with the value for money. I felt like I was getting a high-quality service at a fraction of the cost of other places. The surgery itself went very smoothly, and Apollo was well taken care of throughout the whole process. The staff provided me with all the necessary information on how to care for him after the surgery, which was very helpful. Overall, I was extremely impressed with the level of care and attention that my dog received at the Chesapeake Humane Society. They provided a high-quality service at a great value, and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a caring and professional veterinary service. Thank you, Chesapeake Humane Society, for taking such great care of my dog Apollo!

My furbabies get their vaccinations and dental cleanings here. They have reasonable prices and treat them with loving care.

I’ve been here before and the experience was really pleasant but the person handling the cats was extremely overwhelming, we never even got a chance to look at the cats because she was following right behind us and talking to us the whole time. We weren’t even there for more than maybe 5 minutes and she goes okay which one is speaking to you so we can put the adoption papers in. If you want to take a cat into a separate room to get to know them and pet them you have to sign adoption papers for first. She was handling the kittens honestly quite harshly which was kind of off putting to see. An overall nice woman with i’m sure good intentions but just way too much and not the correct way to go about an adoption process. The front desk staff seemed really lovely though.
