How to Save Money at Arlington Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Long overdue review of the amazing staff at AAH. Dr. Hagan, the technicians, and the front staff are the kindest group of people I’ve encountered in the area for my puppy’s care. At only 6 months old my puppy suffered from a very scary fracture that the team at AAH walked me through with such grace and compassion. They all treated my dog with so much love that she loves going there and has not an ounce of fear despite the traumatic injury. Even after her injury, the team shows the same care for her routine visits. I am super grateful for the entire AAH team!

I have had my dog for about 7 years and have lived in a few different cities, but this animal hospital is definitely in my top three. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you're in the DC/VA area. They were able to squeeze my sick baby in the same day that I called. The staff, vet tech, and vets are always so friendly and honest. The price range for services are extremely reasonable. I fully trust them with my elderly dog's health. Thank you Arlington Animal Hospital for everything!

My dog loves it here! Recently, we had an issue where my dog broke out in hives for the first time. I called AAH & spoke with someone who told me a doctor would reach out soon. I received the call later that night & got lots of advice & reassurance to make sure things went well! I really appreciated that, never had that experience with a vet before.

I saw them for the first time today and I love them. I have a fiesty cat. She's sweet at home, but she gets very stressed at the vet. As such, I give her sedatives in advance of the vet visits. Nevertheless, my previous vet wouldn't even do a physical, for fear of being maimed. The vet here did the whole physical, and didn't make me feel ashamed of my angwy furkid. (The vet also checked out her waxy ears, drew her blood, and gave her vaccines.) The waiting room was empty. No wait. The receptionist is very polite. At the start of the visit, the vet tech listened to me explain why I'm visiting and what I'm worried about. After actively listening, he set my expectations for this visit. After they checked my cat, the vet took her time explaining to me what she did, what she found, and what to expect (lab results). 10/10 highly recommend to everyone. I feel like my cat was very well taken care of. I usually get stressed out about vet visits because my cat is so embarrassingly grumpy, but they handled it like pro's, literally. I'm really happy with them!

Among the several vets we have used, this one probably ranks as one of the worst. The technicians change over constantly, are less than courteous. The clinic bombards you with emails, continuously tries to upsell items, overcharges for trivial paperwork like international health certificates by forcing you to go through a “coordinator”. My recommendation: avoid. There are far better options.
