How to Save Money at VCA Annandale Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My family and i are all very grateful for the fantastic care we received with our dog and our 2 cats. We are sad to be leaving the wonderful staff due to financial reasons, but i do highly recommend them. They helped us learn to give proper care for our senior pup who passed last year and have always been so kind to our anxious cats which led our younger boy to be very vocal and content to explore during their last visit.

Love VCA Annandale and highly recommend reaching out to them for your pet's health care needs, whether it be an annual health check-up or more. Over the past 7 years, our cat Frankie was seen by Dr. Paradise, who we loved, as well as the entire staff, too! They always clearly communicated visit details and helped answer any questions that came to mind. Dr. Paradise was helpful and informative in determining what Frankie's health needs were at each visit, particularly in his last few years as an elderly cat (12-15 years). When it came time for Frankie to move on, they were extremely accommodating and supportive; could not have asked for better support during such a difficult time. Should we find ourselves with another pet in the future, we'll be returning to VCA Annandale, again.

Do not recommend this place for dogs with vet anxiety. I told them about my dog’s anxiety because she’s been abused and they refused to give her previous meds then my dog had anxiety like I warned about. On the first visit, they could see she was visibly shaking and still insisted on trying to work on her. Finally they gave her meds and a week later we went back because they couldn’t help her the first time. On my second appointment, the vet didn’t speak to me but the tech came in saying she needs a trainer. She has no issues at home and just at the vet but they didn’t listen to me.

They are amazing with my pets. They helped me diagnose my dogs allergy problems at the source whereas other locations just treated the symptoms as they came up. I take all 3 of my babies here and they treat them very well.

I would give a zero star if possible. We took our pet for an annual check-up, and they did drew blood from his neck area, and this is what happened. The bruises got worse and worse, so I called them every day to make sure if it's normal (because as a human, we get that after draw the blood), if not, we can take him to the hospital immediately. This NEVER happened to him before and first time we've saw him has those large bruises. They said it's normal to see some bruises and suggested us to pay 125 dollars to test 'blood clot.' Are you serious? I was expecting their sincere apologies about what happened. During my call with manager today, she basically told us 'if you worried about him that much, I would bring him to the emergency room because it's not normal. and it's not our technician's fault.' ARE YOU SERIOUS? I've called this hospital every day and what your team told me was to keep monitoring him. THANK YOU, VCA Annandale, for switching your words and this horrible experience! Please Avoid!!
